  1. History Project “Easter Rising 1916” James Byrne 6th Class

  2. Contents • Introduction • Why did the Rising happen? • What happened ? • Who was involved ? • Where it took place ? • Why was it an important moment in history ? • Conclusion

  3. Introduction • I chose the Easter Rising of 1916 for my defining moment in history because if it didn’t happen we would probably still be ruled by the United Kingdom

  4. Why did the Rising happen? • England ruled Ireland for nearly 800 years • Many past rebellions had been defeated. • Many attempts at Home Rule failed. • A Gaelic revival began in the1880s. The GAA and Sinn Fein were set up. • The IRB were getting active • General dissatisfaction against the British began to show – 1913 General Lockout strike.

  5. Who was Involved ? • The Irish volunteers led by Patrick Pearse. • The Irish Citizen Army led by James Connolly. • Cumann na Mban led by Constance Markievicz. • Total 1400 Republicans or soldiers • The British Army led by General Lowe and General Maxwell. • Police (Royal Irish Constabulary)

  6. James Connolly & my great great grandfather

  7. What happened? • Started on Easter Monday the 24th of April. • Seized key locations in Dublin • Key locations were the GPO, Jacobs biscuit factory, Four Courts, Marrowbone Lane and St Stephens Green. • Pearse Proclaimed an Irish Republic. • There was fierce fighting in the streets • British Army Reinforcements were sent to Dublin from England on April the 26th. • On Saturday the 29th of April Pearse issued a surrender order.

  8. What happened? • Basically saying that he doesn't want the Irish citizens to get hurt and also that they were outnumbered. • A total of 3,430 men and 79 women were arrested and 90 people were sentenced to death. • Fifteen of those (including all seven signatories of the proclamation) were executed.

  9. Casualties

  10. Why was it an important moment in history ? • The Rising was not popular with the Irish People when it happened – Dublin destroyed, people killed • However the people were angry about the executions and now were supporting the rebels. • By 1918 the republican cause was the dominant one in Ireland and the Irish volunteers were ready to fight for their country. • The dail was formed on January 21st 1919 and independence was declared. • The War of Independence of 1919 to 1921 grew out of it.

  11. Conclusion • The rebellion was a military failure. • Destroyed Dublin and killed many civilians. • After 1916 Irish people now support independence of Ireland. • War of Independence and Civil War continued from 1916 to 1924. • Many of the participants in the 1916 Rising were very important in Irish politics like Michael Collins, Eamon DeValera. • Ireland received its Independence
