  1. Joe Billy Bob 10/9/2012 Earth Structure Pre-Questions: 1) What is the Big Bang Theory? 2) What is a theory? 3) What is the Earth made of? Notes:

  2. Diagram Rules • Draw diagrams in pencil • Draw label lines in pen • All labels should be aligned • No arrows or crossing lines • Do not circle parts • Do not draw on line

  3. Earth Structure

  4. Big Bang Theory • Tells us how the universe began based on two ideas: • All matter condensed to a single point and then exploded (bang) • The explosion created the universe (planets, galaxies, etc.) we know today

  5. Earth Structure The Earth is divided into three main layers Each layer is made of different temperature of rock.

  6. Earth Layers crust

  7. Crust • Outermost layer that we live on • Thinnest layer (0 – 30 km) • Solid and made of

  8. Earth Layers crust upper mantle lower mantle

  9. Mantle • Semisolid layer below crust • Split into two layers • Upper mantle • 700 – 1300˚C • 30 - 2900 km • Lower mantle • 1800 – 2800˚C • 2900 – 5200 km

  10. Earth Layers crust upper mantle lower mantle outer core inner core

  11. Core • Makes up 1/3 of the Earth’s mass • Split into two layers • Outer Core • 3200˚C • Liquid iron/nickel • Inner Core • 4500˚C • Solid iron ball

  12. Earth Layers atmosphere crust upper mantle lower mantle outer core inner core

  13. Atmosphere Layers of gas that surround the crust

  14. Follow the link below to review the different Earth layers and their propertieshttp://www.learner.org/interactives/dynamicearth/swfs/earth.swf
