Page 100-101 • 1. What observable characteristics can be used as evidence for classifying a specimen as a plant? In other words, what structures or features do you see that tell you the specimen you observed (elodea) was a plant? • Chloroplasts and/or cell wall (½ pt)
2. Are the chloroplasts you observed moving or stationary? • Stationary (½pt)
3. Inside the mouth, cheek cells are joined together in a sheet. Why are they scattered here? • These cells were swabbed and removed. (½pt)
4. How are the animal cells different from the plant cells you observed (list at least three differences)? • They contain no chloroplasts, they don’t have a cell wall, they needed to be stained, they were scattered, etc. (½pt)
5. What is the relationship between plant cell structure and the ability of plants to stand upright? • Plant cells contain cell walls and a large central vacuole that helps them stay rigid ( ½ point)
6. Cheek cells do not move on their own, so you will not find two organelles that function for cell movement. Name these organelles. • Cilia & flagella ( ½ pt)
7. Were the cells you observed eukaryotic or prokaryotic? How do you know? • Eukaryotic. They had a nucleus and were plant and animal cells. We were able to see them under the microscope ( ½ pt)
8. Is the nucleus always found in the center of the cell? • No. ( ½ pt)
9. Why are stains such as methylene blue used when observing certain cells under the microscope? • Some cells don’t have pigments or color and require a stain to highlight certain features. Staining helps differentiate between different parts of the cell (1 pt)
