  1. Timing Insecticides for Control of OFM/CM Deborah Breth CCE-LOF

  2. Timing Counts • Consider target life stage… • eggs, or hatching larvae? • Use Degree-day models to determine when the life stage is present and how long • Start the degree-day model with “biofix” – • 1st sustained trap catch

  3. 3 Answer Now When is the first spray for CM recommended? • First moth flight • First cover • 220-250 DD base 50F

  4. Codling Moth Bloom egg laying egg laying hatch hatch Codling Moth Biology 1st egg hatch at 220-250 DD50F 1st Flight Mid-bloom Overwinter under loose bark and debris P.McGhee - MSU

  5. Degree-Day calculations 1) Max + Min temp – base temp = daily DD total 2 Start Biofix + Accumulate daily DD = Current DD 2) NEWA –http://www.nysaes.cornell.edu/ipm/specware/newa/ enter start date (biofix) and end date, and base temperature, and select weather station location

  6. NEW NEWA calculator for beta testing- 2009 • http://newa.nrcc.cornell.edu/newaModel/apple_pest

  7. New NEWA Apple Insect Models

  8. Codling Moth Timing Model • MSU model - PETE • Set biofix of first sustained seasonal flight with pheromone traps • Calculate accumulated DD50/88F • First egg hatch is 220-250 DD 50F • 1st spray scheduled for 1st egg hatch + a 2nd spray 10-14 days later • 2nd generation of egg hatch – 1250 DD + a 2nd spray 10-14 days later.

  9. NYFVI project • Looked at modification of PETE model with focus on seasonal trap data • Using a recommended trap threshold of 5 moths per trap per week – • If <7 moths per trap per week, extend insecticide residue 200-250 DD after high trap catch through 10-14 day period – 1 spray • If >7 moths per trap per week – 2 sprays

  10. PETE Modified-PETE CM Spray Timings Green curves represent egg hatch predictions.

  11. PETE Modified-PETE CM Spray Timings

  12. PETE Modified-PETE CM Spray Timings

  13. CM Model modifications • Need to include trap information throughout season • Note B peak that will extend egg hatch of first generation • Under moderate populations – MSU PETE is adequate • High populations – there is no spray gap • Low populations – will overtreat for CM • focus on control of other pests.

  14. OFM Degree day model – base temperature of 45F Mid-Atlantic Orchard Monitoring Guide

  15. Insecticide Timing for OFM Control • 6 days after 1st peak flight • within 3 days of the 2nd peak flight or within 6 days of sharp trap count increase for 2nd peak • 10 days after 2nd generation spray if high population continues • within 3 days of 3rd peak • suggested threshold of 6-8 moths per trap per week

  16. Summary • Trapping Counts ! • Are orchards high, moderate, or low pressure • Set biofix for separate generations • Add 200-250 DD base 50F for CM + 10-14 days • Add 170-200 DD base 45F for OFM + 10-14 days • NEWA and Fruit FAX?

  17. 0 Answer Now When is the first spray for CM recommended? • First moth flight • First cover • 220-250 DD base 50F
