  2. Let’s Warm up • ¼ + ½ = ¾ 2) 3/5 – 1/5 =2/5 3) 3/8 + 3/8 =6/8 =3/4 4) 5/8 – 10/16 =0 CONFIDENTIAL

  3. Customary Units of Length • Nonstandard units of measure give approximate dimensions. Everyday objects are used as units of measure. It can be used to measure length, height and width. • The desk is as long as 6 of my hands • Length: The measurement of distance between 2 endpoints. • The length of my arm is 18 inches • Height: The measurement of distance from bottom to top. • Her height is 68 inches • Width: The measurement of distance from side to side. • The width of the stripe is 2 inches CONFIDENTIAL

  4. Try This! • Use your hands to find the length of the computer monitor answers may vary; sample answer: 3 hand units long • Use nonstandard units to measure the length of a pencil answers will vary CONFIDENTIAL

  5. Explore Customary Length to ¼ inch • An inch (in.) is used to measure short lengths in the customary system. • You can use a ruler, yardstick or tape to measure in inches. 1 2 3 0 CRAYON CONFIDENTIAL

  6. Explore Customary Length to ¼ inch • The foot (ft) and yard (yd) are used to measure larger units in the customary system. 1 yd 1 ft CONFIDENTIAL

  7. Explore Customary Length to ¼ inch CONFIDENTIAL

  8. Try This! • Measure the length of your forearm inches, ruler • Measure the length of a book inches, ruler CONFIDENTIAL

  9. Customary Units of Capacity • Capacity: A measure of a dry or liquid volume of a container. • The container has a capacity of 1 gallon • A coke drink is about 12 fluid ounces. • A regular cup of coffee is about one cup. • A can of oil for the car is about one quart. • A large milk container is about a gallon. CONFIDENTIAL

  10. Try This! • What unit would you use to measure the capacity for each? • A bathtub gallon • A soup bowl cup • A paper cup fluid ounce CONFIDENTIAL

  11. Customary Units of weight • Weight: A customary measurement that tells how heavy an object is. • The dog’s weight is 12 pounds • A strawberry’s weight is 1 ounce (oz) • A pineapple’s weight is 1 pound (lb) • A car’s weight is 1 ton (T) CONFIDENTIAL

  12. Try This! • What unit would you use to measure the weight for each? • A math book pound • An elephant ton • A paper napkin ounce CONFIDENTIAL

  13. Simple conversions with Customary Units • Convert: Change from one unit to another, such as from feet to inches. • Change Larger to Smaller units • To change to a smaller unit, multiply. • Example: How many inches are in 6 feet? • 12 inches = 1 foot • 6 feet = 6 x 12 = 72 inches • Change Smaller to Larger units • To change to a smaller unit, divide. • Example: How many feet is 48 inches? • 1 foot = 12 inches • 48 inches = 48 ÷ 12 = 4 feet CONFIDENTIAL

  14. Try This! • How many quarts is 4 gallons? 16 quarts • How many pounds is 560 ounces? 35 pounds CONFIDENTIAL

  15. Simple Conversion Tables CONFIDENTIAL

  16. Metric Units of Length • Centimeters (cm), millimeters (mm), decimeters (dm), and kilometers (km) are used to measure length in the metric system 1 cm 1 mm 1 dm CONFIDENTIAL

  17. Estimate • Estimate: An answer that is close to the exact answer. • 12 x 779 = 9,348 • 12 x 800 = 9,600Estimate • Estimate is used to get an idea of how large the object is; to pick appropriate units CONFIDENTIAL

  18. Try This! • Estimate and then measure. Tell what unit and tool you use. • The width of your room answers may vary; dm or m; meter stick • The largest step you can take answers may vary; cm or dm; meter stick CONFIDENTIAL

  19. Metric Units of Capacity • Capacity: A measure of a dry or liquid volume of a container. • Ounces are customary units of measurement • Milliliters are metric units CONFIDENTIAL

  20. Try This! • Estimate and then measure the capacity of each object. • A juice box answers may vary • A spoon answers may vary CONFIDENTIAL

  21. Metric Units of Mass • Mass: Amount of matter an object has. • The mass of a math book is 1 kilogram. • Customary Units are used in US • Metric Units are used by most countries CONFIDENTIAL

  22. Try This! • Estimate and then measure the mass of each object. • A bicycle answers may vary • A pair of sneakers answers may vary CONFIDENTIAL

  23. Convert Metric Units CONFIDENTIAL

  24. Convert Metric Units • Change Larger to Smaller units • To change to a smaller unit, multiply. • Example: How many centimeters are in 10 meters? • 1 m = 100 cm • 10 meters = 10 x 100 = 1,000 cm • Change Smaller to Larger units • To change to a smaller unit, divide. • Example: How many kilograms are in 5,000 grams? • 1,000 g = 1 kg • 5,000 ÷ 1,000 = 5 CONFIDENTIAL

  25. Try This! • 5 m = 500 cm • 5,000 g = 5 kg CONFIDENTIAL

  26. Let us take a break! CONFIDENTIAL

  27. Game Let us see how fast you are on this one! • Click me CONFIDENTIAL

  28. Assessment • Use nonstandard units to measure. Tell what units you use. • The length of your pencil answers will vary • The length of your shoe answers will vary • Use customary units to measure. Tell what unit and tool you use. • Length of your forearm inches, ruler • Width of the window in your room feet, yardstick • What unit you will use to measure the capacity of a frying pan. Cup or pint • What unit would you use to measure the weight for eyeglasses. ounce • How many pounds is 2 tons? 4,000 pounds CONFIDENTIAL

  29. Assessment • Alberto makes 8 quarts of punch. How many gallons does he have? 2 gallons • Estimate and then measure using the metric system. Tell what unit and tool you use. • Your height Estimates and measures may vary • Estimate and then measure using the metric system the capacity of a can of soda. Estimates and measures may vary • Estimate and then measure using the metric system the mass of a granola bar. Estimates and measures may vary • How many milliliters are in 3 Liters? 3,000 CONFIDENTIAL
