The Conditional- No Guarantees • To express something that might happen, or would happen, if something else were to occur (if…then) you use the conditional mood (in English, it’s just would + verb) • Often used in a sentence with the word si= if • In French, to create the conditional, you use the future stem of the verb, and then add a set of endings
What was the future stem? • In –er, and –ir regular verbs, the “future stem” just means the infinitive…like regarderorfinir • For –re regular verbs, the “future stem” just means drop the final e…like vendror attendr • There are some verbs with irregular future stems: Aller= ir faire= fervouloir=voudr Être= seravoir= aur
And those endings…? -Ais-ions -Ais-iez -Ait- aient You’ll being seeing these endings again in one kind of past tense
Examples So…J’irais= I would go Tuaimerais= You would like Il regarderait= He would watch Nous voudrions= We would want, We would like Vousseriez= you would be Ilsfiniraient= They would finish To make negative, put ne…pas around the verb
