Two Button Buzzer CircuitThomas Edison - A Brilliant Inventor By: Julie Bisgaard Carol Nadeau
Lesson Overview • Read the trade book, Thomas Edison - A Brilliant Inventor by the Editors of Time for Kids. • Demonstrate how two switches interact in an electrical circuit such as that used to sound a buzzer. • Explore an everyday situation, the two button buzzer circuit activity , where either of two or more buttons can ring a buzzer. Students learn the structure of this type of circuit , draw a schematic for it, and construct a two button buzzer model out of wires, a battery, buttons (switches), and a buzzer.
Instructional Goals • Learn how switches control the flow of electricity. • Learn to draw basic wiring diagrams. • Learn how the electric circuit in a two button buzzer operates. • Learn about teamwork and working in groups. State Standards: • 5.14.4.a-Construct and explain a parallel circuit. • 5.14.4.b-Compare series and parallel circuits. • 5.14.4.c-Explain the use of a specific type of electrical circuit. • 5.14.spi.6-Distinguish between series and parallel circuits. • 5.14.tpi.7-Demonstrate and explain the difference in series and parallel circuits.
Formative Assessment • Teacher will monitor, facilitate and coach students as they progress through the activity. A checklist of objectives will be used to record students ‘progress.
Opening The Lesson • Teacher will read Thomas Edison - A Brilliant Inventor by the Editors of Time for Kids. • Teacher will lead O-W-L activity (Observe, Wonder, Learn) using carousel strategy.
Developing The Lesson • Divide students into pairs. • Have a partner from each group gather needed materials which are on table. • Instruct pairs to use the materials to see if they can get the buzzer to ring. • Teacher will assess progress with checklist.
Closing The Lesson • Students will be asked to diagram the buzzer and write an explanation. • Referring to O-W-L, teacher will lead discussion (what makes the buzzer work).
Teacher Resources • 1 D Size Battery • Battery holder • Bell Wire (5 pieces) • Two Button Switches • Buzzer • Reference - IEEE Teacher Inservice Program
Enrichment Activities • Research the lives of other inventors such as Henry Ford on the Internet. • Create other types of switches (light bulb). • Create a timeline for the development of electricity. • Determine the number of kilowatts used by household appliances.
Accommodations • Students with disabilities may be paired with stronger students. • Teacher may need to help facilitate manipulation of materials.
Standardized Test Items Performance Indicator - 5.14.spi.6 Distinguish between series and parallel circuits. Question - Which of the circuits shown is a parallel circuit?
For The Student Was Thomas Edison a brilliant inventor? Can you make a bell ring?
Learning Goals • Learn Edison’s contributions to the study and use of electricity. • Learn how switches control the flow of electricity. • Learn to draw basic wiring diagrams. • Learn how the electric circuit in a two button buzzer operates. • Learn about teamwork and working in groups.
Assessment You are an electrical engineer who has been asked to diagram how to wire a 2 button buzzer by CEMC. Your diagram will appear in a brochure being produced for home owners.
Learning Activity Students will: • Listen to the read-aloud. • Record observations, wonderings & learnings in the carousel activity. • Build buzzer circuit using provided materials. • Draw a basic wiring diagram. • Work cooperatively with a partner.
Enrichment Activities • Research the lives of inventors such as Henry Ford on the Internet. • Create other types of switches (light bulb). • Create a timeline for the development of electricity. • Determine the number kilowatts used by household appliances.
