  1. Quasars Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. It’s continuing mission, to explore strange, new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before

  2. Quasars were discovered by the radio waves that they give off. Scientists at first had no idea what to these disruptions could possibly be. They still really don’t know.

  3. Because of the initial ambiguity surrounding the Quasars they were dubbed Quasi-stellar radio source’s, because as far as they could tell at the time that’s what they were.

  4. Quasars were sometimes referred to as radio stars because they are an extremely large source of radio waves in the univers

  5. Once scientists started to make sense of what these strange objects are the name was shortened to Quasar (a shortening of the term Quasi-stellar)

  6. Quesars are the most distant object that is visible to us on earth • They show extreme redshift, meaning that they are far away and are moving away very quickly. Some nearly 80% of the speed of light

  7. Quasars give off a ridiculous amount of energy. • Some give off more than 10 times the amount of energy that our entire galaxy gives off. Some give off more than 100 times that amount

  8. Quasars are the brightest things in the known universe and are powered by super massive black holes in their cores

  9. Some Quasars have been found to be surrounded entirely by water vapor that has been created in the atmosphere surrounding the super massive black hole. In fact the water found here is the oldest, largest reservoir of water in the known universe.

  10. Quasars tend to form into groupings of sorts, known as Large Quasar Groups, generally about 600 million light years across. Recently scientists have discovered one of these that is the largest structure in the known universe.

  11. According to the commonly accepted theory that the universe is relatively homogeneous from far enough away, this 1.6 billion light year wide structure should not exist. Nothing over 1.2 billion light years across should exist.
