  2. August 24, 1814 • The British had defeated Napoleon and could now concentrate on fighting with America • The sent thousands of troops to figh in the United States • On August 24, 1814 The British Captured Washington D.C. and Burned the White House

  3. Dolly Madison • The wife of John Madison, is credited for saving many historical documents from the fire.

  4. Fort McHenry: • The British moved their troops to Baltimore and began attacking its harbor • American Troops held them off for over 25 hours and finally forced them to retreat • Francis Scott Key was moved by what he saw and began writing the Star Spangled Banner

  6. Old Hickory • The British forces planed to invade the United States from the South • Andrew Jackson and his troops were ready for them • Andrew Jackson's troops called him “Old Hickory” because it is the hardest wood they knew of

Battle of New Orleans • Andrew Jackson’s sharp shooters hid behind barrels of cotton and waited to shoot the British troops • After the battle 2,000 British soldiers were dead and only 20 Americans • This is considered one of the Greatest battle of the war of 1812 • However, this battle was needless because a piece agreement had already been signed between the British and the Americans

  9. Effect on our Nation • The war of 1812 deeply divided our nation • Many people in New England had been opposed to going to war • Delegates from new England met in private it the Hartford Convention to discuss forming a confederacy

  10. Demands never heard • Their demands were never heard because before they could meet with the president, the war had ended.
