Allison (Alicia) O’Donnell Clase de dos mil siete Condicional Spanish has no “would” I have no wood.
El verbo “would” El verbo “would” no existe! To say “would sing,” add –ía –íamos –ías –ía –ían to INFINITIVO. But it’s EASY. Why? Because, there’s only 1 set of endings for all 3!
Wait a minute! ¡Espere Ud. un momento! Ana: Hey! I’ve seen those before! Aren’t thoseimperfectoendings? Juana: Yes, Ana. BUTcondicionaladds them to todo el infinitivo. ¡Imagínate! Todo el infinitivo… Olé! Yo quiero español MUCHO…
Acentos • Every íwears an accent mark. PUNCH IT LIKE YOU’RE MAD! Make it rhyme with María, pizzería, policía. If I had money, I would buy the pizzeria. Si tuviera dinero, compraría la pizzería.
Irregulares locos Remember those crazyfuturoverbs? The same ones are irregular in condicionalwith the SAME crazy changes! Surprised? He sure is!! Cabría-habría-sabría podría-saldría-querría pondría-tendría-vendría haría-diría ¡Olé! These verbs fit yo-él-ella-usted. Now sing “Mexican Hat Dance” tune with tú, then nosotros.
Para memorizar: • What would we do in that case? ¿Qué haríamos en ese caso? • I would go to the pizzería. Iría a la pizzería. • My friend wouldn’t want María there. Mi amiga no querría a María en la pizzería. She would call the cops. Llamaría la policía. • What would people say? ¿Qué diría la gente? • I would help, but I don’t have time. Ayudaría, pero no tengo tiempo. Ojo! Yo-Él-Ella-Usted have SAME endings! You must guess by context.
¡Recuerda! (remember) We used futuro for: probability wonder conjecture in the PRESENT! NOW! Drumroll…………USE CONDICIONAL for: probability wonder conjecture in the PAST.
Conversación Juan Ana: ¿Quién sería? = I wonder who it was. Who could it have been? Juana: Sería Juan. It was probably Juan. It must have been Juan. I guess it was he. . Ana: ¿Cuántos años tendría? I wonder how old she was. How old could she have been? How many years would she have? Juana: Tendría cincuenta. = She must have been 50. I guess she was 50. She wasprobably 50.
Ana: Why do we call this “would” tense, “condicional?” Juana: Because when we say would, it implies a condition. “I wouldhelp you if I had time.” My help depends on one condition – if I had time. Ana: “When I was a child, I would sleep 12 hours.” Do I use conditional there? Juana: NO-NO-NO! Americans always make that error!! That’s not conditional. That’s imperfecto: dormía, meaning “I used to sleep or I was sleeping.” O, Ana….get it straight!
Compare these… • When I was a child, I would (used to) sleep 12 hours. Cuando era niña, dormía doce horas. • If I had time, I would sleep more. Si tuviera tiempo, dormiría más. Ana: I GET IT! When Americans say “would” (but really mean “used to,”) use imperfecto, y no condicional!
