  14. CONFIRMATION The sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. In Confirmation (the baptized) are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. CCC 1285

  15. CONFIRMATION By Confirmation we are true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obligated to spread and defend the faith by word and deed CCC 1285

  16. CONFIRMATION In Confirmation you are anointed with the oil – called “Chrism” – consecrated oil, which is a mixture of balsam and oil This oil is blessed (consecrated) on Holy Thursday by the Bishop for use in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick

  17. Signs and Rites of Confirmation What the anointing with oil signifies in the different sacraments Baptism: cleansing and strengthening Anointing of the Sick: expresses healing and comfort CCC 1294

  18. Signs and Rites of Confirmation Confirmation /Holy Orders: it is a sign of consecration. Those who are anointed, share more completely in the mission of Jesus Christ and the fullness of the Holy Spirit with which he is filled, so that their lives may give off “the aroma of Christ.” CCC 1294

  19. Signs and Rites of Confirmation Anointing: it signifies and imprints: a spiritual seal on our soul Confirmation is conferred through the anointing with the “oil of chrism” on the forehead and through the words spoken by the Bishop or his delegate “ Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” CCC 1293

  20. Signs and Rites of Confirmation The seal of the Holy Spirit marks us as totally belonging to Christ, our enrollment in his service forever as well as the promise of divine protection combating the world, the flesh and the devil on our journey to eternity CCC 1296

  21. THE EFFECTS OF CONFIRMATION Increase and deepening of baptismal grace It roots us more deeply in the divine filiation (family) which makes us cry “Abba Father. Unites us more firmly to Christ Increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us CCC 1302

  22. THE EFFECTS OF CONFIRMATION Renders our bond with the Church more perfect Gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and deed as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross CCC1303- 2044

  23. THE EFFECTS OF CONFIRMATION Like Baptism, Confirmation is only given once. It imprints on the soul an “indelible spiritual mark, the “character,” which is the sign that Jesus Christ has marked a Christian with the seal of his Holy Spirit by clothing him with the power from on high so that he may be his witness. CCC 1304

  24. WHO CAN RECEIVE CONFIRMATION? All baptized persons who have not yet received the sacrament of Confirmation Reason: Because if not received, the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist remains incomplete. CCC 1306

  25. WHY PREPARE FOR CONFIRMAITON? Preparation leads us to a more intimate union with Christ and a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit – his actions, his gifts, and his bidding – in order to be more capable of assuming our apostolic responsibilities of living the Christian life. A closer relationship with Jesus and the Holy Spirit, to be able to do the bidding of the Holy Spirit, and live our faith better 1308 -1309

  26. WHY PREPARE FOR CONFIRMAITON? To receive Confirmation you must be in the state of grace. You should receive the sacrament of Reconciliation in order to be cleansed for the gift of the Holy Spirit. You should spend time in prayer to receive the strength and grace of the Holy Spirit CCC 1310

  27. WHY PREPARE FOR CONFIRMAITON? You need to have a sponsor who is a practicing Catholic. It is recommended that one of your Baptismal godparents be your sponsor CCC 1311

  28. SPECIAL NOTE A candidate for Confirmation who has attained the age of reason must profess the faith, be in the state of grace, have the intention of receiving the sacrament, and be prepared to assume the role of disciple and witness to Christ, both within the church community and in temporal affairs. CCC 1319

  29. SPECIAL NOTE Many Catholics believe that after they have received the Sacrament of Confirmation that they no longer need anymore religious education. WRONG!!, WRONG!! After Confirmation they now have the graces to really get to know, love and serve God better, by further study of the Gospels, the Catechism, and Prayer. Our religious and Spiritual education never, never ends. If you believe it does how do you become the Christian Jesus calls you to be?
