Engineering Design Process • A series of steps that engineers use to guide them as they solve problems. • It is used to help develop new products. • The steps of the EDP: • Ask • Imagine • Plan • Create • Improve
ASK • During this stage you ask questions: • What is the problem? • What have others done? • What are the constraints (what prevent me from making it)? • Research • Gather information and investigate existing technologies related to the problem • Talk to individuals who share this problem and could benefit from possible solutions
IMAGINE • During this stage you come up with ideas. • What are some solutions? • Brainstorm • Explore and compare possible designs within the group. • Build on the ideas of others • Be open-minded! • Choose the best option
Choose a solution • What materials and tools are needed? • Consider environmental, cultural, time, and financial issues and constraints. • Select the most feasible idea and assign team tasks. Best $$$
During this stage you come up with a written diagram of what you want to accomplish. Examples Draw a diagram. Make lists of materials you will need to create you PROTOTYPE. Plan
Create & test prototype • Build a PROTOTYPE • Protoype – a test model of a product. It is often made with cheaper materials than the final version. • Push yourself and the group for creativity, imagination, and excellence in design. • The goal of the prototype is to prove whether the idea will work together as it is supposed to.
Improve • During this stage you want to look over your prototype and see if anything needs to be reworked or see if you need to start over. • Examples • Talk about what works, what doesn't, and what could work better. • Modify your design to make it better. • Test it out again!
