  1. Characteristics of Life • 1) are made of cells • 2) reproduce • 3) are based on genetic code of DNA • 4) grow and develop • 5) obtain and use materials and energy • 6) respond to their environment • 7) maintain a stable internal environment • 8) taken as a group, living things evolve

  2. Unicellular and multi-cellular

  3. CELLS

  4. Cells

  5. Chapter 1 What is Life? Reproduce Asexual reproduction - involves a single parent; offspring are genetically identical to the parent. Sexual reproduction - involves 2 parents; offspring are genetically diverse. – DNA from both parents

  6. DNA –deoxyribonucleic acid

  7. DNA is the genetic code that instructs the cells what to do. Also give inheritance

  8. Living things grow

  9. Differentiation is when cell change into different cells that perform other functions

  10. Develop means to change

  11. Plants get ENERGY by photosynthesis

  12. Animals get ENERGY by eating other organisms

  13. Decomposers (bacteria and fungi) get Energy byfeeding on dead plants and animals

  14. Respond to environment • Trees loose leaves in the fall

  15. Maintain internal stable environment • Called homeostasis • EXAMPLE– HUMAN BODY TEMPERATURE • WHEN YOU GET HOT --- SWEATING • WHEN YOU GET COLD -- SHIVERING

  16. EVOLVE • TO CHANGE OVER TIME • Life is always changing….. • On the level of DNA…… • Change = Evolution
