Enrollment • Complete an Admissions Application. • AAS degree students must show evidence of a “C” or better in ENG 111 and have a high school diploma on file with student records. • Post Baccalaureate Diploma students must have an official copy of an undergraduate transcript on file with student records. • 4. AAS degree students must take a placement exam for the required Math course. • 5. Register for classes.

Required Law Classes All are available both daytime and evening LEX 110 Introduction to Paralegal Study (also available online) Overview of the paralegal’s role and the skills and knowledge required to be a good legal assistant. LEX 120 Legal Research/Writing Covering the techniques of legal research and writing. Emphasis is placed on locating, analyzing, applying, and updating sources of law and effective legal writing. LEX 140 Civil Litigation I Introducing the court system and the rules governing civil litigation. Covering litigation from client interviewing to drafting pleadings. These classes should be taken before or along with all other LEX courses.
Additional Required Law Classes LEX 121 Legal Research/Writing II (also available online) Advanced topics including more complex legal issues and assignments involving preparation of legal memos and briefs. LEX 141 Civil Litigation II Continuing litigation topics from dispositive motions and discovery to trial procedures. Learn to assist an attorney in preparing and organizing documents for civil litigation. LEX 280 Ethics & Professionalism Legal ethics and the role of the paralegal in a professional work environment. LEX 210 Real Property I The distinction between real and personal property, owner’s rights, restrictions on land use, property conveyance & laws governing real property transactions. LEX 240 Family Law Marriage, separation, divorce, child custody, support, property division, adoption, and domestic violence and drafting relating legal documents. LEX 250 Wills, Estates, & Trust Covering various types of wills, trusts, probate, estate administration, taxes and intestacy. Learn to draft simple wills and prepare estate forms.
Law Electives (both programs) LEX 160 Criminal Law & Procedure Substantive criminal law and procedural rights of the accused. Students learn the elements of specific crimes and how to assist an attorney in preparing a criminal case. LEX 170 Administrative Law Scope, authority, and regulatory operations of various federal, state, and local administrative agencies. Topics include social security, worker's compensation, unemployment & zoning. LEX 211 Real Property II Focus on how to complete title examinations and prepare certain closing documents including the opinion on title and the HUD-1 settlement statement. LEX 220 Corporate Law This course covers the legal aspects of forming, operating, and maintaining a business.
And Even More Legal Electives LEX 260 Bankruptcy & Collections The law of bankruptcy and the rights of creditors and debtors. Learn to prepare and file bankruptcy forms, collection letters, statutory liens, and collection of judgments. LEX 270 Law Office Management &Technology This course provides an overview of law office management and organization. Topics include office forms, filing systems,billing/timekeeping, computer systems, calendar systems, case management, office/personnel procedures, ethics and technology. Upon completion, students should be able to establish and maintain various law office systems such as Softpro, Timeslips, and Summation IBlaze) and monitor case progress. Minimum Grade Requirement In order to maintain the high standards the legal community has come to expect from our students, students must get a C or higher in any LEX class to be used towards obtaining the Paralegal Degree or Diploma.
Credit by Examination CIS 111 Basic PC Literacy Must know Microsoft Professional Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint and understand computer hardware, software and terminology. Will need to get an 80% or more on an exam on each of the five topics, which includes both multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank testing as well as demonstrating the required skills on the computer. It is not easy to test out of CIS 111. Contact: Information Technology Department Don Belle 330-6984 OST 131 Keyboarding Must complete two 3-minute timed-writings at 25 wpm with no more than three errors and produce a one-page report, a table and a letter with no more than 3 errors on each and obtain a 78 or better on a theory test. Suggested Course Order After the three suggested preliminary courses, Introduction to Paralegal, Civil Litigation I and Research & Writing I, you can take the classes in any order you desire, so long as you fulfill any prerequisites noted in the schedule. For example, you must take Real Property I before you can take Real Property II. As part of our effort to have a more consistent and predictable schedule, you will note that the Fall semester will have more of the introductory classes, while Spring semester will be weighted towards the more advanced classes. A suggested, but not required, course order form can be found by selecting the the Degrees and Diploma button and then downloading the suggested course order for your program.
Co-ops An opportunity to learn and earn college credit while working. • Generally you find the job, but assistance is available from the co-op office. • Can be 1 or 2 credit hours depending on the number of hours you work. • Can enter at anytime during the semester Eligibility requirements: 1.Be enrolled in either the Paralegal Technology Degree Program or Diploma Program. 2. Have at least a 2.5 program GPA . 3. Have obtained a C or better in at least 12 credit hours of paralegal program course requirements (may include CPCC-approved transfer courses), at least two of which are LEX courses. (It is suggested that you complete LEX 110, 140,120, OST 136, 164, and ENG 111 prior to registering for co-op). 4. Be registered for a minimum of 3 credit hours of required coursework which will be completed concurrently with the co-op course. Exceptions to this requirement will be made for students who have less than three hours of coursework to complete in order to obtain a paralegal degree. 5. Obtain approval to register for co-op from both the paralegal department and the co-op department.
Co-op Procedures You can meet with the Paralegal cooperative education representative, Eric Price, during his office hours at the Northeast office. 1. Obtain application packet from co-op office. 2. Submit completed application to Eric Price. 3. Meet with faculty to get co-op approval. 4. Bring signed faculty approval slip to Co-op office. 5. Once enrolled, you will work with your faculty coordinator and work supervisor to set your co-op objectives. You will also get a co-op workbook which will help guide you through the co-op and provides a place for the required record keeping. It is your responsibility to keep in contact with your faculty coordinator during your co-op and to turn in all paperwork on time.
Online Classes A number of LEX classes are now being offered online or as hybrid classes, which are both on campus and on line. Please note that online classes will still have some required on campus sessions. You will need to complete the SNAP activation in order to get an id and password to sign into your class. You can access SNAP from www.cpcc.edu. The classes are offered in Blackboard which provides a standardized format for all your online classes. Once you’ve enrolled, a shortcut onto the virtual college site is to go to blackboard.cpcc.edu.

Advisors Each student enrolled in a paralegal program is assigned one of the full-time faculty members as his/her advisor. Each faculty member has posted office hours and is often also available outside of office hours by appointment. If a student already in the program wishes to change his/her catalog year to the current year, that also is handled by the program counselor.
Graduation Your advisor can complete a graduation review using the CPCC computer to compare your program’s requirements to the classes you have taken. One semester before you expect to graduate you contact the Graduation Department (Central High 120) to apply for graduation. A copy of the application for is available online at www.cpcc.edu/graduation_information/. The dates to apply are published in the course catalog. For example: If you are graduating in: You need to apply for graduation in: Spring 2004 November 1 - 30, 2003 Graduation will accept late applications, but remember there is a two to three week turnaround time and you may find you need time to obtain a waiver or substitution or to take a missing course. Diploma students will not be allowed to graduate unless an official copy of their transcript is on file with CPCC. A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher is a requirement for graduation.
Job Placement Career Center Located in Central High Bldg. Room 122. Provides assistance writing resumes, job seeking skills, workshops, counseling as well as maintaining job listings. The entire Employment Security Commission jobs bank with job listings from across the State and an ESC representative is available on Campus as well, also in Central High. The Career Center & ESC services are FREE to CPCC students! Northeast Campus The Paralegal Department is located at the new Northeast Campus (at the corner of Grier Road and Harris Boulevard approximately .5 miles from UNCC). All LEX classes (day and evening) are offered on the NE campus, except for LEX 120 which is offered on the Central Campus until Fall 2006. Non-LEX classes may be offered at other CPCC locations
