A Towering Success • The challenge: As a team, create the tallest structure • Use only the materials provided. • We have about 20 minutes to complete the project. • Each group will be asked to present your tower and construction organization. • The structure must have a “cool” name. • Please list and explain the awesome features of your structure.
Tower of Success Reflections • How did you feel about the outcome? • What important things happened during the build? Surprising? Stressful? • What did you learn about teambuilding? • How does this apply to your “real” world? • What strategies would you use to combat dysfunctional team behavior?
What is a team? “A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable” (Katzenbach & Smith, 2003, p. 45)
Characteristics of Effective Teams • A clear, elevating goal • Results-driven structure • Competent team members • Unified commitment • Collaborative climate • Standards of excellence • External support and recognition • Principled leadership (Larson & LaFasto, 1989)
The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team Dysfunctions Behavior • Inattention to results • Avoidance of accountability • Lack of commitment • Fear of conflict • Absence of trust • Status and Ego • Low standards • Ambiguity • Artificial harmony • Invulnerability (Lencioni, 2002)
