What is a narrator? • The narrator is the storyteller. • The author is the writer. • They are not always the same person, but they sometimes are. • There are three main types of narrators, or points of view:
First-Person Narrator • A first-person narrator is a character in the story who talks to us using first-person pronouns, such as: I, we, my, me. • (+) We get a very personal view of what is happening from the first-person narrator. • (-) We know only what he or she thinks and experiences.
Third-Person Omniscient Narrator • The third-person omniscient narrator is not a story character and almost never refers to himself/herself directly. • Omniscient means all-knowing so the omniscient narrator is able to tell us what every character thinks and feels. They can also tell us about events happening in multiple locations.
Third-Person Limited Narrator • This narrator plays no part in the story – he or she just tells the story. • This narrator focuses on one character in the story, but talks about that character in the third-person, using ‘he’ or ‘she’. • (-) We share one character’s reactions, but what we know about the other characters is limited.
