THEORY There three main Theories in Sociology • Symbolic Interactionist Perspective -Looks at how people interact with each other and how they make sense out of these interactions through use of symbols.
Structural Fuctionalism • Based on the notion that society is stable, orderly system characterized by social consensus. • Society is composed of interrelated parts, each of which serves a function and ideally contributes to the wellbeing of society.
Functions are divided into two: a) Manifest functions -- intended or overtly recognized by the participants. b) Latent -- unintended functions that are hidden. Dysfunction -- bad outcome of given functions.
Social Conflict • sees society as being an arena where there is a constant power struggle for control of scarce resources.
