  1. Unit Two How do we perform operations with whole numbers and decimals?

  2. LEQ 2.1How do we read and write large numbers? • Standard notation 45,342,679 • Expanded notation 4,693= (4*1,000)+(6*100)+(9*10)+(3*1) • Number and word notation 4,500,000= 4.5 million

  3. LEQ 2.2 How do we read and write small numbers? • Standard notation 0.0237 • Expanded notation 1. 247= (1*1)+(2*0.1)+(4*0.01)+(7*0.001)

  4. LEQ 2.3 How do we add, subtract, and round decimals? • Keep columns straight and line up the decimal points when adding and subtracting. • Look one place to the right of the place to which you are rounding to decide if you need to round up or not.

  5. LEQ 2.4 How do we multiply by powers of 10? • Powers of ten are numbers that can be written using only 10s and 1/10s. • 5*100= 5* 10^2 • 1*1/100= 1* 0.01= 1* 10^-2

  6. LEQ 2.5 How do we develop an estimation strategy for multiplying by decimals? • To estimate 3.8 * 9.4, round to 4 and 9. Think 4*9= 36, so your answer needs to be near 36. Use this to help you place the decimal point in you answer.

  7. LEQ 2.6 How do we multiply by decimals? • Use the estimation strategy. • Use the lattice and slide the decimal point along the correct lattice.

  8. LEQ 2.7 How do we estimate quotients and divide whole numbers? • Estimate by rounding. So 237/ 8 can be thought of as 240/8, so the answer should be close to 30. • Use the partial-quotients algorithm to divide.

  9. LEQ 2.8 How do we estimate and calculate quotients with decimal dividends? • Estimate by rounding. 54.4/16 as 60/15=4. • Divide, ignoring the decimal point for now. So 544/ 16= 34. • Use your estimate to help you place the point. 3.4 Makes sense since it’s close to 4.
