Anchor Charts • We use anchor charts to make thinking permanent • These charts are displayed around our classroom • Refer to the anchor charts to build on earlier learning or remember a specific lesson • Anchor charts are sometimes called “I” charts
I PICKGood Fit Books • I choose a book • P urpose – Why do I want to read it? • I nterest – Does it interest me? • C omprehend – Am I understanding what I am reading? • K now – I know most of the words * You will practice modeling your book choice over the next several weeks.
Book Boxes • Use the “I-PICK” anchor chart to select 5 books to put in your book box • Keep your journal and pencil in your book box • Book boxes must be returned to our designated location
Tasks of The Daily Five • Read to Self • Read to Someone • Work on Writing • Listen to Reading • Word Work
Read to Self The best way to become a better reader is to practice reading each day with I PICK “Good Fit” books that you have selected for your book box.
Read to Self • Three ways to read a book: • Read the words • Read the pictures • Retell a story you have heard before *We will be building our stamina by adding more time each day until we reach our desired goal. We will revisit the I chart regularly.
Read to Self 1. Read the words: The words tell the story as the author wants it to be told. Reading the words allows you to practice the many strategies we work on throughout the year.
Read to Self 1. Read the Pictures: Pictures can tell as much as words in some books. Take a picture walk through the book, looking at picture clues to help you understand the story.
Read to Self 1. Retell a story: It is fun to pick a familiar book of interest. These books are easier to read because you know what happens and it is easy to tell the story over and over again.
Read to Someone Partner reading provides opportunities to practice strategies, improve fluency, check for understanding, and hear your own voice while sharing in the learning.
Work on Writing Just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is to write every day.
Listen to Reading Hearing fluent and expressive reading of good books expands your vocabulary, helps build your stamina and will make you’re a better reader.
Word Work Expanding your vocabulary leads to greater fluency in reading, and better comprehension.
CAFE Board You will place your name on a Post it Note by the goal you are working on. As we work on strategies, they will be written on sentence strips and posted on the CAFÉ board under Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expand Vocabulary.
