  1. ASSESSING CRITICAL THINKING ABILITY Steven McCrary

  2. Learning Objective • Self-appraise our critical decision-making ability using • Self-assessing Questions and • Classroom Rules

  3. Self-assessing Questions • What is the goal of the problem? How well did I achieve it? • Did I use sound principles of Scriptural interpretation? • What did I really "know" versus what did I "assume"? • Did I adhere to reasoning standards of clarity? of relevance? of depth? of breadth? of central importance? of objectivity? • Did I follow a systematic approach? Did I adhere to it? • Did I develop moral standards based upon Biblical principles? Did I adhere to those moral standards?

  4. Classroom Rules for Thinking Objectively: • Some guidelines that will establish our attitude and disposition.

  5. Classroom Rules for Thinking Objectively: • Because you and I are not God, it is inevitable that some of the beliefs and viewpoints that you and I firmly hold are completely wrong. Therefore, beware of intellectual arrogance. • Until you and I understand the viewpoints of those who disagree with us, we do not understand our own viewpoint very well.

  6. Classroom Rules (con’t) • Until you and I can summarize another viewpoint so well that those who hold it would agree with our summary, we do not understand that viewpoint. • If you and I wish to be an objective thinker, we must be willing to seriously consider alternatives and to change our minds. • Always assume that those with whom you disagree are (at least) as intelligent as you, and have motives as noble as yours.

  7. Classroom Rules (con’t) • In this class, the standard for "successful critical thinking" is based on the process for reaching a conclusion, not on the conclusion itself. So, we will focus on three things: • understanding the issues; • writing standards for actions and actors based on Biblical principles; • developing an explicit, rationally justified position.
