Danes celebrate two days of Whitsun • Denmark’s most famous classical composer is Carl Nielsen, especially remembered for his six symphonies while the Royal Danish Ballet specializes in the work of Danish choreographer August Bourneville.

  7. Nation flag • The Flag of Denmark, Dannebrog, also just called the red Flag has first been mentioned in 1478. Its cross design has been adopted by several other mainly Nordic countries. The Dannebrog state flag is the oldest in the world flown by an independant nation.

  8. Current Leader • The Danes, a homogeneous Gothic-Germanic people, have inhabited Denmark since prehistoric times. Danish is the principal language. English is a required school subject, and fluency is high. A small German-speaking minority lives in southern Jutland; a mostly Inuit population inhabits Greenland; and the Faroe Islands have a Nordic population with its own language. Education is compulsory from ages seven to 16 and is free through the university level.
