Perennial Points • Perennials are plants that grow indefinitely • Herbaceous • Little to no woody tissue • Some evergreen; some die back in frost • Less maintenance than annuals
Perennial Points • Best used in mass plantings for bold display • Use evergreen backdrop for canvas • Know ultimate size • Know if they will freeze back • Know sun requirements
Perennial points • Think form and texture when designing the bed • Use contrasting forms ie clumping with uprights, delicate with bold • Group hot colors(red, orange and yellow) together • Group cool colors together • White, blue, silver and green always go
Perennial points • Break the rules! • They are usually easy to transplant so you can move them if things aren’t working out
Perennial points • Provide water • Fertilize with controlled release • Mulch heavily • Scout for insects regularly • Prune and stake as needed
Perennial points • Best time to divide/transplant is generally winter to early spring • Harder to establish in summer • Many will not bloom in the 1st year from seed • Propagate by division when possible
Natives • Plants that were here before Columbus • Best adapted to our environment in Florida • Help to replace habitat • Still comes down to: • PUTTING THE RIGHT PLANT IN THE RIGHT PLACE
