Molding Overview • Molding can be done safely and cheaply without prior experience • Silicone molds create a plastic part. • A mold is created using a master part. • Many copies of the master can be created using the mold.
Creating the Mold • Obtain a master part. • Find a container that will fit the part with additional space on all sides. • Raise the master (if necessary). • Mix the silicone rubber compound. • Add the mixed silicone rubber, making sure the part is aligned correctly and there are no air bubbles. • Let the mold harden for 24 hours.
Creating the Part • Remove the part. If using a two piece mold, cut mold. • Mix the liquid plastic compound. • Fill the mold with the compound. • Let the part set for 15 minutes. • Repeat.
Advantages of Molding • Makes multiple copies. • Cost effective. • Easy and requires no experience. • Creates fairly detailed parts. • Fast.
Disadvantages of Molds • Need to obtain a master. • Cannot mold large parts. • Cannot mold hollow or parts. Thin parts are difficult. • Molds can break. • Not precise.
