  1. Sediment Managementa key toSustainable Development Presented By: J. Douglas Reid-Green, BASF Corp.

  2. Contaminated Sediments are a Worldwide Concern • Drinking water – impacted sediments act as a persistent source of pollution • Impact to food supply – fish and shellfish advisories, eutrification of lakes and lagoons • Commercial considerations – ports and harbors, dams, and recreational uses of waterways including ecotourism.

  3. Apparent Cost of Remediation is High • In developed countries the costs can be born by improved infrastructure • In developing areas the cost must be mitigated by generation of beneficial use products from the treated sediments

  4. Contaminated Sediments to Valuable Resource Sediment Treatment Produces New Raw Materials Beneficial Use Products Topsoil Building Products & Systems

  5. Value Greater than Cost Environmental Reclaiming resources Clean water, Safe Food, And Health Ecosystem • Social • Sharing in a bright future • Jobs, Schools, Housing, • Clean and Vibrant Ecology, • Health care • Economic • Preparing the basis for growth • Infrastructure Development: • Power Generation, Water Supply, • Rail and Roads, Wastewater, Buildings • Strengthening Agriculture • Topsoil, Water Supply

  6. Direct Benefits Cleaner Environment Improved Infrastructure Improved Water Supply New Resource for Economic Growth Secondary Benefits Intergenerational equity Offset to depletion otherwise caused by economic activities Waste minimization Values Returned
