  1. The Shipping Industry

  2. Who We Are • Non-profit organization located in Southport, CT • We work to educate seafarers, port communities, and students about protecting the marine environment www.namepa.net

  3. Key Terms • Port: A place where cargo is loaded or unloaded from ships, located on the coast or along rivers • Harbor: A naturally occurring body of water where ships can anchor safely (similar to a port) • Import: Bringing products/ goods into a country to be sold • Export:Sending products/ goods to another country to be sold

  4. Key Terms • Ballast Water: Water held in bottom of ship to stabilize it by adding weight • Freight: Cargo, the merchandise being carried • Containerization: Method of transporting cargo that uses a container to store the cargo throughout the process, increases efficiency

  5. What can you find in a port? Bulk Carrier Container Ship A ship that carries cargo in large containers (the size of truck trailers) • A cargo ship that carries only one product, cargo held below deck

  6. What can you find in a port? Barge Tug boat A small, powerful boat that pushes or pulls barges and other large ships in areas that are difficult to navigate • A large, flat-bottomed boat that transports bulk goods where large ships can’t fit

  7. What can you find in a port? Supertanker Ferry A boat that transports passengers on a set route • Very large ship, most carry unprocessed (crude) oil

  8. Shipping Facts • 90% of world trade is done through shipping • Shipping is the greenest method of transportation (the emissions are less than aviation or trucking) • The largest oil tanker ever, the Knock Nevis, was 1,504 feet long- so big that it couldn’t fit into most ports!

  9. Malcom McLean- began in trucking industry then took the trailers off his trucks and used them in his steamship company (Sea Land Services) • Known as the Father of Containerization • Quicker and more efficient (used less people, standards set so containers fit all ships and trucks) History of Containerization

  10. How does shipping impact the environment? • Noise pollution: affects animals, especially animals like whales that use sonar • Ballast water: brings invasive species • Dredging: damages habitat on sea floor • Oil Spills: harms animals and the environment

  11. 1. Put food coloring in Bowl A • 2. Put bottle in Bowl A on its side • 3. Fill 1/3 of bottle with colored water and notice the difference in how it floats • 4. Move bottle to Bowl B and empty water into the bowl Ballast Water Activity Materials 2 bowls of water 1 small, recycled soda bottle and lid Food coloring

  12. What did you learn? • Ships take on ballast water to stabilize when they don’t have cargo (Bowl A) • They dump this ballast water when they pick up cargo (Bowl B) • When colored water (ballast water) is released into Bowl B it shows how invasive species can be carried from one area to another by ballast water
