SkillsUSA • Winners of state contest qualify for national contest held in Kansas City, Missouri in June of each year • Nearly 5000 students attend national conference and compete in 96 different skill areas • National winners may be invited to compete at WorldSkills
WorldSkills • Global organization devoted to promoting vocational education and training internationally • http://www.worldskills.org/ • Last competition was WorldSkills Calgary in September of 2009 • USA sent competitors to AmeriSkills in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in March of 2010 at the invitation of the Brazilian government • Next competition is WorldSkills London 2011 • USA will be taking 16 competitors to London—biggest contingent in history of WorldSkills for USA
WorldSkills London 2011 • “With 150,000 expected visitors, you can be inspired by watching 1,000 competitors from 50 nations competing in 45 skill areas over four exciting days of competition.” • Being used as a dry run for some 2012 Olympic plans • Video
Cisco Networking Academy Program—the Single Step that Propelled SCC • Global program designed to teach IT skills • More than 900,000 students world wide • SCC has been an academy for nearly 10 years • Involvement in Networking Academy opened the doors for SkillsUSA and then WorldSkills • http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/netacad/index.html
Germany Visitors • Due to contacts via WorldSkills, SCC hosted eight German visitors from Cisco Networking Academy in Hannover Germany • Exposed my students to entirely new culture • Enriched my teaching through understanding of IT needs worldwide • Relationships continue through Facebook contact with • Planned visit to Hannover with my students failed to materialize due to funding, but future plans are in place for more exchanges
