How it began • January 1996 - research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, 2 Stanford students going for their PhD - originally called BackRub • Normal search engines - ranked results by counting how many times the search terms appeared on the page What google did – analyzed the relationships between websites (called PageRank) • Eventually, they changed the name to Google – a misspelling of googol, 1*10100, signifying the return of large quantities of info.
How it began • Started on Stanford's website at google.stanford.edu • Domain registered 9/15/1997 • Company incorporated 9/4/98 • Based in garage in Menlo Park, California
