  1. Isaiah 8Mahershalalhashbaz “Swiftly to the booty, Speedy to the prey”, Easy to catch, Hard to say!

  2. ISAIAH CH 8

  3. Green-shaded areas = “Assyria” c. 1000-600 BC

  4. Assyria Timeline Four kings of Judah are included: Uzziah (good), Jotham (OK), Ahaz (horrible), and Hezekiah (good) We are talking about Ahaz. He was no good (II Kings 16)

  5. Isaiah 8:1-4 • Isaiah and his prophetess wife would have a son. • His name would indicate what the Assyrians would do to Israel (Northern) • During wicked Ahaz’ reign in Judah • Before the baby was 2 Y.O., plunder would begin • C. 731 BC (BCE?) • Full annihilation occurred c. 721 BC

  6. Isaiah 8:5-13 • “refused the waters of Siloah” seems to refer to • Gentle, cool springs of God’s provision • Ability to see (John 9:1-11) • Wilfully blind • Judah had tried to make a pact w/ Assyria • Remember that “Rezin” (Syria) and (Remaliah’s son) “Pekah” (N. Israel’s king) were in league vs. Assyria and Judah • God promises to bring Assyria out of its own country (overflow his banks), and “flood” Israel with that mighty army • Judah not immune (except for Jerusalem)

  7. Isaiah 8:5-13 (cont’d) • “thy land, O Immanuel” here seems to refer to Israel and Judah as God’s Presence on earth. • “associate”, “gird yourselves” and “take counsel together”, is God saying “I was going to do your fighting; but since you insist on doing your own, you are on your own, and will be broken in pieces” • Should have listened • Should have relied on God To the invaders (Assyria) God says, “Don’t let it go to your head; God is with Judah. He is just using you to punish them.

  8. Isaiah 8:14-15 Another prophecy of Christ! • Sanctuary = we in Him, He in us (John 17) • Stone of offense, Rock of stumbling • Matt 11:6 • John 6:66-68 • Luke 20:16-18 • Rom 9:33 • I Pet 2:7-8 • Inhabitants of Jerusalem offended • That gives us gentiles the Gospel (Is 8:15-18) • And many Jews to be blinded to Christ (Rom 9, 10, 11)

  9. Isaiah 8: 16-22 The dangers of false prophets! • Key verse: 8:20 “if they speak not according to this Word, it is because there is no light in them” • II Peter 1:15-21 • Deut. 13:1-3 • II Cor. 4:4; 11:2-4; 11:13-14 • Gal. 1:6-9 The moral of chapter 8 is: “there is only God, and only one Word of God; He is making you a great deal; don’t go looking elsewhere!”
