Community Action Prioritization System(CAPS)A Research and S&PF Program PartnershipNC and PNW Research Stations
Project Objectives Develop an objective prioritization process that • identifies geographic areas with high fire hazard • in proximity to populated areas • where management actions might - reduce fire hazard - improve local economies FY02 - Regional prioritization FY03 and beyond- Finer scale prioritizations
Research Partners • PNW Focused Science Delivery Program • NC Forest Inventory and Analysis • PNW FERA Team • RMRS Economics • PNW Forest Inventory and Analysis
Role for Research • • Assemble national data on each factor • - geographic link • - ensure data quality • • Develop a system that • - combines factors • - compares geographic regions
Factors that address 4 questions: (1) Where are the combustible materials? (2) Where are the combustible materials in hazardous conditions? (3) Are there populations in close proximity? (4) Would management actions to reduce the hazard also improve the local economy?
Where are the combustible materials in hazardous conditions?

Conclusions • We have developed techniques to acquire and display factors (variables, data layers). • We can combine factors in ways that display differences among regions. • We need help - selecting the important factors. - selecting factor weightings
