Thoroughly inspect the patient's scalp and palpate for symmetry and any tenderness. The hair should be parted in several places to examine the condition of the scalp. A systematic (either front to back or back to front) "massage" of the scalp should be performed paying close attention for any abnormal bumps and any sensitive areas.
