The Steuben Prevention Coalition serves the entire county of Steuben, NY which is part of the Appalachian Region Steuben County is primarily rural, sharing many risk factors and challenges as the rest of Appalachia Our Community Population: 97,361 Steuben County, NY 1390 sq. miles Rhode Island 1212 sq. miles

1991 Coalition first formed • Spring 2009 – Applied for DFC Mentee-Mentor Grant • October 2009 – DFC grant awarded • Spring 2012 - Applied for 5 year DFC Grant • September 2013 – DFC grant awarded • September 2018 – DFC grant denied • October 2018 – Community Outreach for sustainability Coalition Key Dates
Federal Grant – $125,000 grant for 5 years. The funding source is the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). We are now in our 4th year of the first 5 year grant and will be making application for 2nd 5 year grant in March of 2018. (currently unfunded as of September 2018) Two Goals of DFC 1. Increase collaboration relative to the drug problem in our target area. 2. Decrease use of alcohol and other drugs among our youth. Drug Free Communities Grant

Motivation • Internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job, role or subject, or to make an effort to attain a goal. (Speaker – Mrs. Stacey Brzezinski, Haverling High School) • Positive School Climate & Presenting Ideas • Creating positive school climates can decrease negative behaviors and increase positive outcomes for both students and staff. Learning what works from other schools and making changes to fit your school is essential. After developing your ideas you need to know how to present them in order to get support. (Speaker – Mrs. Amy Brewer, Haverling High School) • What Does It Mean to be a Good Leader • A leader is someone who brings people together and guides them towards a common goal. Anyone can tell others what to do, but effective leadership requires much more than the ability to assign tasks to a group. (Speaker – Mrs. Pam Colomiao, Chemung Canal Trust Company)

Community Opioid & Substance Abuse Forum The Steuben Prevention Coalition participated along with Community members, law enforcement, and recovering addicts in the first Community Opioid and Substance Abuse Forum Thursday night in Bath (February 9, 2017). Approximately 100 people attended the discussion at Haverling High School to both learn about the issues facing the community and ask questions about how they can help loved ones who may be suffering. www.steubenpreventioncoalition.org
Tall Cop Event • Held on March 29th • Approximately 300 in attendance, education and law enforcement professionals, parents and community members • Topics covered included alcoholic energy drinks, alcopops, alcohol and drug concealment methods, drug paraphernalia, over-the-counter drugs, e-cigarettes, popular party drugs as well as a teenager’s “mock room”.
