Discovering the Heart of God Part 11 Holiness
Introduction We speak of God being Holy. In fact one of the most popular hymns is Holy, Holy, Holy. Yet when we contemplate God’s holiness, we begin to realize our own deficiencies. How can we enter into God’s holy presence and live?
God is Holy Isaiah 6:1-3In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” Isaiah served as a prophet during the reign of King Uzziah who has died. Isaiah is concerned about what the next king will be like. He goes to the temple to pray and encounters the living God!
3 And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” He gets a glimpse of God and encounters seraphim. They cover their feet (creature) and their eyes (who can look upon God and live).
God is Holy Isaiah 6:3And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” These seraphim state that God is holy, holy, holy. Not that He is merely holy, or even holy, holy. He is holy, holy, holy. The Bible never says that God is love, love, love, or mercy, mercy, mercy, or wrath, wrath, wrath, or justice, justice, justice. It does say that He is holy, holy, holy, the whole earth is full of His glory!
Holiness Defined The term “holy” is often understood in its contemporary usage rather than its true meaning in the Scriptures. The Bible states that: (1) To be holy is to be distinct, separate, in a class by oneself. The primary meaning of holy is “separate.” It comes from an ancient word that meant, “to cut,” or “to separate.” This means that the one who is holy is uniquely holy, with no rivals or competition.
Holiness Defined When the Bible calls God holy it means primarily that God is transcendentally separate. He is so far above and beyond us that He seems almost totally foreign to us. To be holy is to be ‘other,’ to be different in a special way. The same basic meaning is used when the word holy is applied to earthly things. 1 Samuel 2:2No one is holy like the Lord, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.
Holiness Defined The Bible states that: (2) To be holy is to be morally pure. When things are made holy, and when they are consecrated, they are set apart unto purity. They are to reflect purity as well as simple apartness. Purity is not excluded from the idea of the holy, it is contained within it. The idea of holiness is more than the idea of purity. It includes purity but is much more than that. It is purity and transcendence. It is a transcendent purity!
Holiness Defined Psalm 24:3-5Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who may stand in His holy place? 4He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully. 5He shall receive blessing from the Lord, And righteousness from the God of his salvation. Habakkuk 1:13a You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, And cannot look on wickedness.
Holiness Defined The Bible states that: (3) God is Holy in ALL His nature and character. We have a tendency to list holiness as “just another attribute” of God. Holiness is different than the others as it is foundational to all the other attributes. God is not just love, He is a holy love. His justice is a holy justice. His mercy is a holy mercy.
Holiness Encountered Isaiah 6:4-5And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. 5So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.” When we truly encounter God’s holiness, we realize our own “unholiness”. The unsaved have no idea of God’s holiness, so they are under the false impression that they are “good people” and can enter into heaven based on their own merit.
Holiness Encountered Isaiah 6:5So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.” Look at Isaiah’s “proper” response to God’s holiness. He is a prophet of God and calls God’s judgment (woe) upon Himself. He is unraveling on the inside and realizes the very instrument he uses to serve God, is unclean (not holy).
Holiness Encountered Isaiah 6:5So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.” To see God’s holiness, is to also see the great need in the world around us. The world is blind to who God really is, and the church has been a poor reflection of His character to the world.
Holiness Redeemed Isaiah 6:6-7Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth with it, and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; Your iniquity is taken away, And your sin purged.” Isaiah recognized his fallen state, and God responded by purifying Him. Jesus is the ember who offered Himself upon the alter of God. It is Jesus who takes away our iniquity and purges our sin. When Jesus enters into our lives, He makes it holy so we can enter into God’s presence.
Holiness Refocused Isaiah 6:8-9aAlso I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” 9And He said, “Go, and tell this people: … Isaiah experienced the healing and forgiveness that only God can give. God than asks a question, “Who will go for us?” Isaiah had known and served God, but his encounter with God’s holiness left him changed. He now was willing to go and serve with a new motivation.
Holiness Refocused Isaiah 6:8-9aAlso I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.” 9And He said, “Go, and tell this people: … Isaiah was called to pronounce judgment, we are called to pronounce that Jesus has taken our judgment upon Himself so we can experience forgiveness. As you contemplate the Holiness of God and what Jesus has done for you, it should motive you to serve, but there is one more important aspect we need to look at.
Holiness Refocused 1 John 1:5-7This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. God is pure! If you encounter God’s holiness, you will understand that there is no longer any room to play games. If we say we have fellowship with God, we need to live like it!
Holiness Refocused 1 John 3:1-3Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. If we have seen God we will purify (consecrate & sanctify) ourselves, even as God is pure (holy).
Holiness And You We are about to celebrate communion. A time where we remember the price Jesus paid. He took our impurity so we could be clothed in His own righteousness. Take a moment as the deacons come and rededicate yourself to a life of holiness. Please do not play games and make a commitment you do not intend to keep. It is better not to make a vow to God than one you plan to break.
