Sin and God’s Love Objectives: • Examine 2 images of sin that are frequently used in Scripture: • Missing the mark • Hardness of heart • Appreciate that in Christianity the primary message about sin is one of forgiveness
Sin and God’s Love Objectives: • Realize that distinction among types of sin is intended to help people overcome sin • Understand that social sin refers to behavior patterns, values, and social structures that encourage or support sin in a society
Selfishness Ancient wisdom often pointed to selfishness as the root of sin, a misguided placing of our will and desires above that of God and the needs of others.
Sin • Assignment: • Read Romans 1: 18-32. Describe how this reading applies to our culture today?
Sin An on-going process of alienation and dehumanization that separates us from God and one another.
Alienation • Sin alienates because it separates us from God and from one another. • Sin is an offense against God. It is a failure to respond to God’s love. • Sin also injures the entire human community. It plagues our world and our environment. When we sin we pollute.
Dehumanization • Sin also dehumanizes us because when we sin we become less than human. • When we sin be keep ourselves from being the very best that we can be and what we were meant to be. • Sin violates God’s intention for creation

Missing the Mark • Ultimately the “mark” we aim for is God. • When we sin, or miss the mark when we settle for behavior that does not reflect the love for God, others and ourselves. • Missing your goal, not being the person you were created to be • Becoming less than human; de-humanizing
Hardness of Heart • A “hard heart” is a turning inward. • According to scripture, sin has as much to do with our” attitudes as with our actions, with our being as with our behavior. • “Only MY opinion matters; only MY desires matter
