L’Ecole de Choix / The School of Choice (Haiti) Partnership Case Study: Mobiles for Education in Crisis and Conflict Settings
L’Ecole de Choix / The School of Choice Principal: Dr. Mary Clisbee, Fischler School of Education, Nova Southeastern University Board Chair: Prof. Laura Hartman, DePaul University
The School of Choice: Our Students • Our students (200) come from the most extreme conditions of poverty, “timachan” from Port au Prince. • We wanted to build them a shelter, but also a future.
But . . . Haiti’s Status Quo: • Little electricity, limiting access to technology • Few textbooks or materials • Schools provide no snacks or meals • Teachers receive below a living wage and have limited qualifications
you become resourceful. When you do not have resources,
Choix’s Positive Innovation / Disruption • Mission: Dignity, Self-Esteem, Respect • Curriculum: Focus on communications and leadership => offering choices • Language: Creole, French, English • Quality: Qualified teachers, schoolbooks, meals, clean water, safe environment • And first-rate technology resources to support our learning objectives
Case Example: Intel Learning Series • Intel provides technical assistance to NGOs deploying Intel Learning Series solutions • IESC: Skills-based volunteer program, focus on professional development & integration • Inspiring teachers & students on what is possible • Engaged with Choix in 2011, sent three IESC teams, moving up the learning curve
Case Example: Intel Learning Series • Choix e-learning environment includes appropriate infrastructure… • 35 rugged Intel classmate PCs • Critical Links classroom server • Teacher laptops & projectors • 1 mbit/sec broadband internet • …and relevant software, including • BrainPOP to empower teachers with digital content across the curriculum • Waterford Early Learning software for English literacy, math & science
Lessons Learned • E-learning is attainable in developing economies • Teacher training is crucial • Partners must provide ongoing support • By destroying preconceptions that act as barriers to innovative solutions, we can see the power of partnerships in addressing complex problems. Choix is open for additional partners!
The Impact of our Intel Alliance Partners Thank you to our Intel Learning Series Alliance Partners! EducationService Corps

Choix student population • Our unique population: • Creole at home, National exams in French, English immersion in school • Minimal(or no!) educational preparation • Student-centered leadership development and communication-oriented educational techniques and curricula are designed to be regional and country-wide models. • Choix serves as a source for teacher training for other schools in the region and beyond.
The Impact of our Intel Alliance Partners • Choix represents a physical facility model of flexible use and adaptable to other sites, teaching models and goals. • The facility has been programmed for day and night use as a school, community center, for adult education, and to provide training in work skills and technical training. Sampling of Student Work -Choix Curriculum • Through technology, Choix students learn about themselves, their history and their heritage. • They also have access to information about diverse other cultures, in order to gain a complete understanding of the world that we all share and to build toward a promising future for Haiti.
The Impact of our Intel Alliance Partners • Feedback from Teachers & Students: • Fun • Multi-level • Effective and quality mastery of skills • Time management (since scarce resources) • Standardized • Gives these children access to choice, dignity and respect that others have throughout the world.
Impact of IESC: Education is a Strategic Investment in Haiti • A country’s economic growth is directly correlated with the learning levels of its population. • The skills associated with even oneextra year of schooling increase aggregate labor productivity by approximately 7 % • For each 10% increase in the proportion of the population that has access to basic literacy skills, there is correlative 0.3% higher annual growth rate for the country. • Reading competency in elementary grades is critical for success in future grades.
Dr. Mary Clisbee, Principal, L’Ecole de Choix “Despite all of the challenges of adopting new innovation in Haiti, Intel has been tremendous to work with! They have been understanding and haven’t given up on us or the project even when we have had to start all over, from scratch when issues arose. We face intense conditions in Haiti … as is the case in all developing nations, and the only way we will be able to improve these conditions is through partners like Intel who are non-judgmental, persistent, and kind.”
