Current in Series Circuits In a series circuit, the current in every component is exactly the same as in every other component.
Voltage in Series Circuits • There is a voltage drop across each element in a series circuit. (Loss) • Mechanical or chemical (generator or battery) energy is converted into electric energy EMF. • Sum of individual voltage drops is always numerically equal to the EMF.
Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law • The algebraic sum of the emfs and voltage drops must be equal. • EMF is a voltage rise so we assign a “+” sign to all emfs. • Voltage drops are assigned “-” signs
Kirchhoff’s Current Law • The current approaching a given electrical junction in a circuit loop equals the current leaving this junction. • If not so, junctions would either be maggoty with electrons or else they would dry up, ‘nar electrons and be unable to support the current.
