Relationship GMES - ESPON • Approach fostered by DG-Regio • We are more than a producer of geoinformation • We aim to set the standards for the next generation of large LU/LC mapping in Europe • ESPON (and follow up?) can exploit GMES products • Participate actively in the product definition through user groups
Defining the Urban Areas to be mapped in 2005-08 • We need to specify which cities/regions to map in the next project GSE-LAND • Guess number on service volume: 50 cities + regions TBD • Future sites: User involvement is needed (city or regional authority) • Choosing from: • Eurocities (130) / Enviromental Committee (30) • Urban Audit 2 (250) • DG-Env (top 500 urban areas; greater than 100,000 inhab.) • ESPON?
Urban Areas to be mapped in 2005-08 • ESPON can make recommendations on the areas to be mapped by GMES • ESPON can become an active user and provide an assessment of products
