  3. Seeking Religious Freedom • 1) Puritans (Protestants that didn’t like the Anglican Church) • 2) Separatists (Puritans that wanted to leave and set up their own church) • 3) Pilgrims (Separatists that came to America on a religious journey) • Landed in Massachusetts at a place called Plymouth. • Left Europe so they could create a place of religious tolerance

  4. Mayflower Compact • William Bradford leader of the Pilgrims that helped write the document • A formal document that: • Pledged loyalty to England and would do things for the good of the colony VIDEO

  5. Native Americans • Helped Pilgrims after the first winter • Most Pilgrims died of disease and malnutrition

  6. Native Americans video • Squanto & Samoset taught pilgrims to farm and where to hunt and fish, and make peace with other Natives. • With these skills, Pilgrims were able to survive in Massachusetts.

  7. Massachusetts Bay Colony • Great Migration: Puritans left England because they disagreed with the church and were being persecuted by King Charles I. • Formed the Massachusetts Bay Company on a royal charter and formed a new colony. • Massachusetts Bay Colony • John Winthrop was the colony’s governor • 1630 led 900 men, women, and children to Massachusetts Bay

  8. Connecticut • People weren’t happy with Massachusetts and Puritan leaders • Moved to Connecticut (good land and more religious freedom) • Wrote the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut • first written constitution in America • described the representative government in detail

Rhode Island and New Hampshire • Roger Williams • Forced out of Massachusetts because he wanted religious freedom • Said it was wrong to take land from Natives • Anne Hutchinson • Questioned the authority of religious leaders in Massachusetts, found guilty of false ideas and had to leave and went to Rhode Island • Rhode Island was the first place in the colonies where people could practice any religion freely • New Hampshire became independent of Massachusetts in 1679

Conflicts with Native Americans • Indians were willing to sell land and courts frequently ruled in favor of Natives. • 1675 War against the Wampanoag people • War began after 3 natives were executed for murdering colonists. • King Phillips War VIDEO • Wampanoag people were defeated • War destroyed the power of the Native Americans in New England
