  1. The Reading Isaiah 11:6-10

  2. Hello, Can you please help me understand the idea of the wolf, the Lamb, and the child, in Isaiah Chapter 11? To whom does that prophecy apply to? Is it something already done, or will all of these events happen in the future? I know there is something in there for us the Christians, but I cannot define exactly what it is. Thanks.

  3. The Wolf, the Lamb and the Child.

  4. Thank you for the question. • Remember that we are studying the book of Galatians on Wednesday night, and we have mentioned that “The Law” was a “tutor” in order to guide us unto Christ. Galatians 3:25. • We have also mentioned that all that is written in the Old Testament, was written for our own admonition. Romans 15:4; 1 Cor 10:11. • There are at least: • J. Barton Payne’s Encyclopedia of Biblical Prophecy lists 1,239 prophecies in the Old Testament and 578 prophecies in the New Testament, for a total of 1,817 • Isaiah chapter 11 is one of those prophecies!

  5. We need to understand that Isaiah is a very messianic book. • By this, what I am saying, is that the writer presents a lot of prophecies concerning the messiah, Jesus. • All chapter 11 is, is a messianic chapter. • He uses a lot of symbolism. • The main mistake of many religious groups, especially the premillenialists, is to try to make every word from Isaiah chapter 11 literal, when the language is pure symbolism. • Many recognize that there area lot of symbols, but their false doctrines require that some symbolism be taken in a literal way, in order to fit or fix their false doctrines.

  6. Isaiah 11:1-5 -There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 2 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. 3 His delight is in the fear of the LORD, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears; 4 But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, And faithfulness the belt of His waist.

  7. Verses 1-5 describe the Messiah. • About the phrase: • “There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.” • Revelation 5:5 - But one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals." • Revelation 22:16 -"I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star."

  8. Regarding what Isaiah says in: Isaiah 11:2 • “The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him,” • We can verify that it is talking about the Messiah when we read: • Matthew 3:16 - When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him.

  9. Regarding: • “He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth” (V.4) • Revelation 1:16- He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. • Revelation 2:16- Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth. • Revelation 19:15- Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. • 2 Thessalonians 2:8- And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.

  10. (Verse 4) “But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the meek of the earth;…” • Who are the meek of the earth? • The meek of the earth (verse 4) are the citizens of the kingdom. • a. Matthew 5:3-5- "Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.

  11. No one has a problem with these symbols. • Now, verses 6-10 describe in a symbolicway, the character of the citizens of that Kingdom. • Remember: • The Kingdom. • The root. • The Meek • The poor

  12. What animals are mentioned in Isaiah, and what is the meaning of all that? • The wolf, • The lamb, • The leopard, • The goat, • The calf, • The lion, • The cow, • The ox, • The cobra, • The viper.

  13. Isaiah 11:6-10 - "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, The calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them. 7 The cow and the bear shall graze; Their young ones shall lie down together; And the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child shall play by the cobra's hole, And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper's den. 9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD As the waters cover the sea. 10 "And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious."

  14. The picture of the wild animals being domesticated or tamed, and all of them living in peace together, with the small child guidingthem, is one of peace and tranquility. • Isaiah says: “in all My holy mountain”, • What is the mountain of God? • “THE CHURCH OF CHRIST”

  15. Isaiah 2:2-4 - Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the LORD'S house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. 3 Many people shall come and say, "Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths." For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore. Any people, any nationality, and any language, can now come to the “mountain of the Lord” from now on. All will be welcome, and no one can do any harm to them! No more Jews…No more Israel…No more one nation…all are welcome!

  16. Zechariah 8:3 - "Thus says the LORD: 'I will return to Zion, And dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be called the City of Truth, The Mountain of the LORD of hosts, The Holy Mountain.'

  17. Hebrews 12:18 - For you have not come to the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness and tempest,

  18. On this mountain, no one does evil, because peace prevails in it. • a. Ephesians 2:14-16 -For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.

  19. Among the Christians who are now “New Creatures… Old things have passed away”. • 2 Corinthians 5:17 -Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

  20. The premillenialists are forced to make this part of chapter 11 literal, by applying it to something that is still in the future. They affirm that in the so-called “millennium”, all of the animals will literally live in peace. • But, they cannot make literal the phrase that says in verse 4: • “with the rod of His mouth”

  21. The Cincinnati Zoo shot and killed a western lowland gorilla on Saturday after a 4-year-old boy slipped into the animal's enclosure, a zoo official said at a news conference. Harambe, a 17-year-old, 400-pound gorilla, carried the boy around its habitat for about 10 minutes in what the zoo's dangerous animal response team considered a life-threatening situation.

  22. Even so, the inspired writers of the New Testament applied chapter 11 of Isaiah, to the time of the Gospel and of the church. That is, to the time from Pentecost, Acts chapter 2.

  23. Isaiah says in verse 10: "And in that day” • a. Romans 15:12 - And again, Isaiah says: "There shall be a root of Jesse; And He who shall rise to reign over the Gentiles, In Him the Gentiles shall hope." • b. The Gentiles will have peace and hope in the Messiah, at the same time that all of the animals and the child will live together in peace.

  24. If Christ is not reigning today in His church- His kingdom, then the Gentiles, cannot be saved by the Gospel.

  25. This passage in Isaiah is a prophecy from the Gospel time, saying that any sinner can be converted to Christ, and in Him find peace with God, and with himself.

  26. Isaiah 11:11-16 - It shall come to pass in that day That the LORD shall set His hand again the second time To recover the remnant of His people who are left, From Assyria and Egypt, From Pathros and Cush, From Elam and Shinar, From Hamath and the islands of the sea. 12 He will set up a banner for the nations, And will assemble the outcasts of Israel, And gather together the dispersed of Judah From the four corners of the earth. 13 Also the envy of Ephraim shall depart, And the adversaries of Judah shall be cut off; Ephraim shall not envy Judah, And Judah shall not harass Ephraim. 14 But they shall fly down upon the shoulder of the Philistines toward the west; Together they shall plunder the people of the East; They shall lay their hand on Edom and Moab; And the people of Ammon shall obey them. 15 The LORD will utterly destroy the tongue of the Sea of Egypt; With His mighty wind He will shake His fist over the River, And strike it in the seven streams, And make men cross over dry-shod. 16 There will be a highway for the remnant of His people Who will be left from Assyria, As it was for Israel In the day that he came up from the land of Egypt.

  27. Verse 11-16 of Isaiah deals with the work of the Gospel, that God uses in order to bring together “the remnant” from everywhere in the world. • a. Romans 11:5 • b. Romans 9:27 Romans 9:27 -Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, The remnant will be saved. Romans 11:5 (NKJV) 5 Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

  28. What about the figure of all of the animals? • The wolf, The lamb, The leopard, The goat, The calf ,The Lion, The cow, The ox, The cobra, The viper… • Is nothing. They are just figures, symbolism, to show us that in the Kingdom of Christ, the church, we are going to get along, because Christ has made all things possible for us.

  29. Some may say, “I disagree because you are comparing the character of men, with animals.” But… That’s what the Bible does. That is exactly what our God of heaven and earth does… Eze22:27; 38:13; Jer 5:6; 13:23; Mt 7:15; Lu 10:3 Ezekiel 22:27 -27  Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, to shed blood, to destroy people, and to get dishonest gain.

  30. Some may say, “I disagree because you are comparing the character of men, with animals.” • But… That’s what the Bible does. That is exactly what our God of heaven and earth does… Eze22:27; 38:13; Jer 5:6; 13:23; Mt 7:15; Lu 10:3 Ezekiel 38:13 - 13 Sheba, Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish, and all their young lions will say to you, 'Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?' " '

  31. Some may say, “I disagree because you are comparing the character of men, with animals.” • But… That’s what the Bible does. That is exactly what our God of heaven and earth does… Eze22:27; 38:13; Jer 5:6; 13:23; Mt 7:15; Lu 10:3 Jeremiah 5:6 - 6 Therefore a lion from the forest shall slay them, A wolf of the deserts shall destroy them; A leopard will watch over their cities. Everyone who goes out from there shall be torn in pieces, Because their transgressions are many; Their backslidings have increased.

  32. Some may say, “I disagree because you are comparing the character of men, with animals.” • But… That’s what the Bible does. That is exactly what our God of heaven and earth does… Eze22:27; 38:13; Jer 5:6; 13:23; Mt 7:15; Lu 10:3 Jeremiah 13:23 - 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil.

  33. Some may say, “I disagree because you are comparing the character of men, with animals.” • But… That’s what the Bible does. That is exactly what our God of heaven and earth does… Eze22:27; 38:13; Jer 5:6; 13:23; Mt 7:15; Lu 10:3 Matthew 7:15 - 15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

  34. Some may say, “I disagree because you are comparing the character of men, with animals.” • But… That’s what the Bible does. That is exactly what our God of heaven and earth does… Eze22:27; 38:13; Jer 5:6; 13:23; Mt 7:15; Luke 10:3 Luke 10:3 - 3 Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves.

  35. The Wolf, the Lamb and the Child. • The lessons for us to take home this evening, from all of these figures, are that Christ would die, and He would set up a Kingdom that would never be destroyed. This is His church. In this kingdom, peace would reign forever and ever, because God is PEACE! • You are enjoying this peace now, this refreshing time, and this “fellowship” with many people who like wise, love God, like you and I.
