  2. The Main Idea • U.S. used to contain 221,000,000 acres of wetlands. In a century it has dropped to 103,000,000. That is 119,000,000 acres of wetland we have lost.

  3. Natural Causes • Subsidence • Wave erosion • Saltwater intrusion- When saltwater runs into a fresh water • Sea level rise • Tropical storms and hurricanes • Erosion of barrier islands

  4. Human Causes • The growing population • Increase in agriculture • Draining for more land • Building canals, levees, and dam structure • Oil infrastructure • Fisheries and seafood
