  1. THE JOURNEY OF THE SPERM & EGG OBJECTIVES: • The student will understand how human fertilization begins. • The student will know the order of events that take place during fertilization.

  2. Journal- Left Hand Side Write down everything you know about human fertilization. Write in complete sentences, in essay form, using paragraphs.

Egg’s Journey: • The OVA is OVULATED out of the OVARY (the egg pops out of the ovary) • The sperm meets the egg in the FALLOPIAN TUBE • The sperm and egg join and their DNA mixes • A fertilized egg is called a ZYGOTE • The cells within the zygote will divide and in about a week there will be about 100 cells! • A fertilized that is about 100 cells big is called a BLASTOCYST • Once the blastocyst enters the uterus it is ready to IMPLANT • The process of IMPLANTATION is when the blastocyst burrows into the ENDOMETRIUM which is the nutrient rich lining of the uterus.

  8. GROUP WORK!!!! With a partner, you will: Create a time line of the Fertilization Process (Start after the sperm has entered the body! End the time line at Implantation.) You must include: • At least 10 events • A full sentence description of each event • A drawing or illustration of each event • An original title for the time line
