  3. Whig Ideology: Whiggery 1. Expand power of federal government 2. Encourage industrial and commercial development 3. Form a unified economic system 4. Cautious about westward expansion - could produce instability 5. Favored BUS, corporations and modernization

Whig Supporters • Great Triumvirate: Clay, Webster & Calhoun • Wealthy, more aristocratic Americans • Merchants and manufacturers • Wealthy planters in the South • Rising commercial class of the West (migrants from the NE) • Evangelical Protestants (for development and improvement of society) • Anyone who hated Andrew Jackson
