The Purpose… • The Purpose of the project was to construct a life-like simulation of a 3-D person in a rolling vehicle.
The Plan… • Make a model of a mid-sized sedan using solid works. • Import this model into Nastran 4-D for analysis on car body. • Construct a person (female) to drive the sedan in solid works. • Place the person in the car and analyze the forces experienced by her.
Revisions… • Initially, a lotus Elise was constructed and used for the model, but after long compilation time due to filets and realistic suspension, the model was simplified to a sedan. • The initial crash dummy was a male, but due to size constrictions, could not fit in the vehicle.
Implementation… • Knowing the solid works applications, a sedan was constructed through a series of cuts and extrusions. • The female driver was made through a series of mates and constraints on cylinders and spheres. • The files were opened in Nastran 4-D and constraints were re-applied.
The Simulation… • Initially we tested the effects of a car landing on it’s roof in Working Model 2D • A series of Nastran constraints composed the sedan’s suspension, and the female “dummy’s” joints were modeled after rudimentary human anatomy, wearing a lap belt. • After finalizing the drawings and constraints, the real world properties were applied (ie: 9.81 m/s*s for gravity, collision, material properties, etc.)
Results… After hours of rendering, the final simulation shows the impact on the human as the sedan rolls over. The sedan was traveling approximately 60 mph, when it hits the slanted curb at a 45 degree angle. The impact broke the suspension and lost the rear left tire as a result.
