Flexibility for choosing elective courses • The University of Eastern Finland has 4 faculties: • Faculty of Science and Forestry • Philosophical Faculty • Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies • Faculty of Health Sciences • Altogether 12 fields of study, 100 degree programmes • All students have free choice of minor subjects

  9. “We have flexibility for choosing elective courses of our choice, sometimes even from a different department. I personally like Joensuu as compared to other cities in  Finland. Maybe because it is small and feels like home. University, city centre and supermarkets are near, and the roads are good enough for biking so you can easily access anyplace.”Sita Pun, IMPIT student

International studying environment • Three international MSc programmes at the School of Computing: • IMPIT (International MSc Programme in Information Technology) • CBU ICT (Cross-border University MSc Programme) • CIMET (Color in Informatics and Media Technology) • At SoC, staff from more than 10 countries, and PhD students from 15 countries • At the University, students from about 70 different countries

Wellmaintainedfacilities • Access to computer labs 24/7 • Well-equipped research facilities for speech and image processing, colour research, educational technology and eye-tracking • Six student cafeterias at the campus, offering lunch and cafeteria services • Library services, with access to electronic databases and articles all over the world

  13. “The School of Computing located in the Science Park is unique, with experienced researchers, talented and committed professors who treat me more as an equal, and I am allowed to reach the facilities anytime.  Classes are offered in a real technological manner that combines both theoretical and practical learning environment. Joensuu - smallbutlively city • Capital of the North Carelia region • Total population of 72 000; of which 12 000 higher education students • Joensuu is located next to the Russian border and about 400 km North-East from the capital of the country, Helsinki • All student apartments located within 5 km from the campus, and have good bus connections and biking routes • Situated on lakeside, and a river runs through city centre

  15. “Joensuu is peaceful and quiet which gives you time for your studies. As a small city, everything is in walking distance which really helps as a new student trying to settle in. It is not very far from the capital city and its mid way to Lapland . So its a strategic position for those who would like to travel through Finland.”Myriam Munezero, IMPIT graduate, PhD student

Student Union activities • The Student Union organizes various trips, parties and happenings • Annual trips to Lapland, St. Petersburg, Stockholm and Koli national park • Sports facilities for free or for very low cost: football, volleyball, aerobic, sports afternoon twice a year • Cultural activities, baking and cooking evenings • You can even meet Santa!

  17. “Student Union for internationals is very active at organizing various trips to other parts of Finland or even abroad, different parties, notifies about fun events etc. There is a very nice cafeteria in Science Park, where students like to gather for lunch and chat. City has reasonably good night life: different clubs, pubs etc. Internationals say that once you have been in Joensuu - you never forget that experience and always remember that time as it was something special... as actually it was... special :) “Shukhrat Nekbaev, IMPIT student

Studentbenefits • As a university student, you have access to: • health care services and dental care for free or for a very low cost • student meals for about 2,50 € • 50% discount in trains and long distance buses • discounts for museums, theatre, concerts and sports events • You can also join many student activities: write in the Student Union newspaper, sing in the University choir, join the student brass band or student theatre.

  20. 10. Four very different seasons All four seasons have their different activities: Winter: skiing, skating, ice-swimming, ice-fishing Spring: outdoor activities, hiking Summer: swimming in the lake, fishing, canoeing, beach volley Autumn: picking berries and mushrooms

  21. “Joensuu is a great place, surrounded by beautiful forests and lakes. It is quiet and calm place but at the same time it is full of life and energy. Students from all over the world bring originality, their own attitude to life, culture and a bit of craziness. Together with traditional Finnish way of living it gives great mixture :) In Joensuu you can not be bored! I spent there almost one and half years and I met many wonderful friends, got to know the Finnish culture (and not only Finnish), developed scientifically but also I learnt a lot about the life.So it is time for conclusion: I love Joensuu and I am sure you can also fall in love with it :) “PawełNiechoda, IMPIT student
