  2. What is a polygon? • A polygon is a closed plane shape made out of straight lines. • The lines that make up the polygon are called sides. • The points at which the lines meet are called corners.

  3. What is a polygon? • A polygon has the same number of sides as it has corners. • Polygons can be broken into two categories: • regular • irregular

  4. What is a regular polygon? A regular polygon is a polygon with all sides and corners equal.

  5. What is an irregular polygon? An irregular polygon is a polygon with different sides and angles.

  6. Now let’s discuss different polygons…

  7. The triangle… • The triangle has three sides and three angles. • It can be regular and irregular. It all depends upon the angles and sides.

  8. The rectangle… • The rectangle is an irregular polygon because the sides are not equal.

  9. The square… • The square is a regular polygon because all its sides and angles are equal.

  10. The pentagon… • The pentagon has five sides and five angles. It can be a regular or an irregular polygon.

  11. The hexagon… • The hexagon is a six sided polygon. It has six angles. It can be regular and irregular.

  12. The heptagon… • The heptagon is a polygon with seven sides and seven angles. It can be regular and irregular. It all depends on the sides and angles.

  13. The octagon… • The octagon is an eight sided shape with eight angles. It can be regular and irregular.

  14. Closed Polygons around us… • Polygons surround us • everywhere we go. • If we go shopping we may see a rectangular polygon saying that the shop is closed.

  15. Polygons around us… • If we walk in the street we see many different polygons to be used by drivers or by passers by.

  16. Polygons around us… • Signs around us have different shapes. • Different shapes have different purposes.

  17. Closed A rectangular or square polygon… • A square or a rectangular sign gives information.

  18. A triangular polygon… • A triangular sign displays a warning. Be careful!...

  19. Other Polygons… • Octagonal signs give orders. • Orders should be obeyed to avoid inconveniences to everybody.

  20. Without signs… • Without signs our life would be without direction.
