Communication/Language • You said you’d help me in a minute • But I want to talk about whales • You sure are fat. Your breath smells. • What time do we eat? When is lunch? Is it time to eat yet? Can I have Pizza today?, etc., etc., etc.,
Strategies for Communication/Language • Listen with Autism ears first • Be clear in your requests/statements • Set limits • Teach appropriate skills • Cartooning, scripting, social narratives/scripted stories, social skills groups, visual supports, circle of friends, conversation starters, direct instruction, power cards, reinforcement
Social • I don’t like you • Growling/barking • Standing too close • Hugging everybody • Sneezing/coughing on others • Look at me when I am talking to you
Strategies for Social Interaction • Listen with Autism ears first • Set limits • Teach appropriate skills • Video modeling, peer medicated instruction and intervention, reinforcement, self-management, social narratives/scripted stories, social skills groups, visual supports, cartooning, circle of friends, direct instruction, extinction, peer mediated interventions
Behavior • Just take your seat • You need to put that away • Don’t talk back to me • Stop writing in the margin • Why are you barking?
