BEAL BANK54th REGIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR • Part of International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) Millions of student projects worldwide • Our Region: 8 counties, 600 schools • 900 middle/high school students here today, won at school and district fairs. Winners go to State and International

TWO KINDS OF JUDGE RED RIBBONS Science CategoryJudges determine 1st, 2nd, 3rd places BLUE RIBBONS SpecialAward Judges determine donor organizations’ own prizes.
ORIENTATION REDsit at table with the number on your name badge Captains take one of the packages on table BLUE sit at table with your organization’s name
Special Award Judging • BLUEjudges use your own scoring criteria to determine your winners (you may wish to use ISEF scoresheets). • Submit your results to Special Award desk by 1:00 p.m (students will leave at Noon) Following slides refer to RED judgesonly
PROJECT BREAKDOWN Science Categories EachRED group judge projects in one Division & Category ( sometimes two )

ROUND 1 Summary NEW THIS YEAR ! Each judge should complete a scoresheet for each project. • If possible, leave time for group discussion • Use scores as basis for discussion
ROUND 1 Summary Your group picks Top Three projects plus Honorable Mentions (HM). For categories with only one judge group, rank 1-2-3 & pick up to six HMs. All Captains submit results and all scoresheets to Admin desk by Noon.
ROUND 2 Summary Required if more than one judge group per category (shown on Captain’s results sheet). • Captains meet up at Admin desk, go compare projects (no interviews) • Rank 1-2-3 & select up to six Honorable Mentions in category. • Submit results to Central Admin desk by 1:00 pm

DON’T SCORE Unattended projects Projects withRED dot on board label. They failed ISEF rules. However, do interview students withREDdot projects.

SCORING • Complete a scoresheet for each project • Score on either Scientific Thought or Engineering Goals, as appropriate • Use scores as basis for discussion • Give all scoresheets to your Captain
TEAM PROJECTS • Include all members in the interview to ensure each contributed to the project. • The final work should reflect the coordinated efforts of all team members. • Note different ISEF scoring UseBLUEscoresheets

SENSITIVITY • Consider age and maturity. • Be aware of knowledge level. • Be respectful : please discuss, not lecture, in your interview. • This is serious competition for students
Judging “DOs” • Discuss the project with the student. • Only one Judge at a project at one time • Budget 8-10 minutes for each project. • Complete notes, evaluations & scoring away from the student. • Remember your interview is a memorable experience for the student.
JUDGING “DON’Ts” • Ask about parents or school • Judge someone you know • Fill out forms in front of the student • Discuss your judging process with students/parents/teachers later
CAPTAINS’ RESPONSIBILITIES • Leadership, discussion, consensus building, ranking and accuracy. • Arbitrate differences of opinion. • Listen closely for public address announcements. • MAINTAIN THE TIMETABLE
CAPTAINS’ RESPONSIBILITIES • Begin judging when released at 9 a.m. • Return Round 1 results and all scoresheets by Noon. • Liase with other Captains for Round 2 (if needed). Another member can sub. • Return Round 2 results by 1:00 p.m., before taking lunch.
