Community Profile Highlights Highlights in Simcoe-York (2001 to 2006): • Fastest growing region in Ontario and growing more diverse • Immigration fuelling growth • Francophone community is small but growing • Aboriginal community experiencing significant growth • Youth population is on the rise

  3. Fastest Growing Region In 2006, there were 1,314,916 people living in Simcoe-York, which is 10.8% of Ontario’s population

  4. Fastest Growing Region Simcoe-York’s population increased by 208,612 people or 18.9%, which is nearly three times the provincial rate

  5. Increasing Immigration • 49,875 newcomers settled in Simcoe-York between 2001 and 2006 • The overwhelming majority (93.2%) chose York as their home • Two-thirds of newcomers said they came from Asia and the Middle East, similar to Ontario overall • European-born people made up the second largest group of newcomers both in Simcoe-York and Ontario as a whole • In total, one-third of Simcoe-York residents (33.1%) reported being born outside of Canada

Simcoe-York is Richly Diverse • More than one in four residents in this region is a visible minority; 95% live in York • Residents of Simcoe-York reported more than 70 different languages as their mother tongue • Regional Variations • 44% of York residents reported a language other than English or French as their mother tongue, compared to 9% of Simcoe residents • The top five mother tongues other than English or French in Simcoe were all European, whereas in York they were Asian, South-Asian, Middle Eastern, and European • One in four York residents speak a Chinese language

  8. Small but Growing Francophone Community • Between 2001 and 2006, the number of Francophones in Simcoe-York grew by 1,860 people, an 8.7% increase • Simcoe-York is home to 4.2% of Ontario’s Francophones—over 23,000 people • The majority of Francophones in this region live in Simcoe

Significant Growth in the Aboriginal Community • Simcoe-York’s Aboriginal community increased by nearly 38% (4,555 people) to 16,640 people • Aboriginal people are 1.1% of Simcoe-York’s total population • More than 75% of Aboriginal people in the area live in Simcoe, and are heavily concentrated in the City of Barrie

  10. Youth Population Growth Ages 13 – 24 Between 2001 and 2006, Simcoe-York’s youth population grew faster than any other region in Ontario

Younger Population • Simcoe-York has one of the highest proportions of children in Ontario • York residents are younger and aging at a slower rate than Ontario as a whole • In York, just 1 in 10 people are seniors • People in Simcoe are slightly older and aging faster than the province overall • Fewer than 1 in 5 Simcoe-York seniors live on their own - in York, just 3 in 20 seniors live on their own

Community Profile Highlights • Also of Interest: • Simcoe-York is home to 10% of Ontario’s Métis population • Compared to the provincial average, there is a higher proportion of university graduates, particularly in York, where a significantly higher proportion of residents have a university education (40%) • In 2006 fewer people were unemployed compared to the province as a whole • The lowest individual and household median incomes are in the Indian Reserve of Christian Island 30 and in Midland
