The Earth revolves around the Sun once every 364 ¼ days. • The revolution around the sun is called orbit. • The Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours (once a day) • Earth is tilted on a 23 ½ degree axis • Counter-clockwise rotation of Earth; Earth revolves counter-clockwise around the sun.
Solstices - days when Earth is most tilted towards the sun; June 21 or away from the sun December 21. • Equinoxes– Days when Earth is not tilted and sun directly over the equator – 2 days when hours of daylight almost equal hours of darkness.
Day and Night • Light can only travel in a straight line. It cannot travel around the curvature of the Earth to illuminate the other side. • The Earth’s own shadow makes the night side of the Earth dark • One half of the Earth is always lit, while the other side is in darkness • The line between the lit portion of the Earth and the dark side of the Earth is called the Terminator
