  1. Chapter Sixteen Specialized Units

  2. S.W.A.T. • Special Weapons And Tactics (S.W.A.T.) is utilized for high risk operations. • S.W.A.T. members are required to participate in additional training. • They are subject to callout 24/7.

  3. Gangs • Responsible to catalog and track known gang members. • Gathers intelligence on current trends and members. • Valuable unit in apprehending gang offenders.

  4. Narcotics Unit • Responsible for detection, targeting, and eradication of illegal drugs.

  5. Narcotics Unit • Responsible for detection, targeting, and eradication of illegal drugs. • Provide assistance for other officers in areas of expertise. i.e. preparation/writing search warrants

  6. Vice Squad Responsible for detection and appre- hension of all violations of vice related ordinances. This includes prostitution, Gambling, sexually oriented businesses, pornography, tavern and bar checks, licensing and work cards for above businesses and employees.

  7. Canine Units • K-9 Team is composed of a trained dog and the dog’s Deputy/handler • The dog lives with it’s handler • They work nights but can be called out during the day • Functions include: apprehension, crowd control, clearing buildings, and searches for suspects, drugs, bombs, evidence.

  8. Community Oriented Policing(COP) • Have numerous functions and assignments. • Neighbor liaison • Assigned specific geographical area. • Neighborhood problem solver.

  9. Search and Rescue • Composed mostly of civilian volunteers. • Highly skilled individuals • Mountain rescue • Water rescue • Avalanche rescue • Assists law enforcement in: • Lost children • Downed aircraft • Lost hiker • Many other searches

  10. Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team (C.A.R.T) • Experienced accident investigators. • State of the art equipment • Investigates fatal and serious injury accidents. • Can diagram crime scenes such as homicides

  11. Court Services • Responsible for security in courthouses and courtrooms. • Starts each session of court. • Maintains order in court. • Helps jury members (lunch, etc.) • Serves civil papers.

  12. Training The training unit schedules, provides, and supervises training of department deputies to insure that all officers in the office meet the training standard set by law.

  13. Criminal Intelligence Unit The CIU acts as a repository and clearinghouse for information.

  14. Chaplain Corps • Civilian volunteer religious ministers from various churches. • On call to assist deputies. • Provide spiritual and inspirational guidance. • Notify next of kin when needed.

  15. Reserve Corps • Composed of civilian volunteers. • Have certification through POST. • Special Function Reserve Officer, have police powers when working under supervision of certified police officer. • Perform numerous duties.
