What is NAFTA? • North American Free Trade Agreement • Established Free Trade Zones between US, Canada, and Mexico • ‘Fair Trade’ means placing restrictions on imports • ‘Fast-Track’ means authorizing the President to sign trade deals with a single Congressional vote • ‘Trade Deficits’ mean that the US imports more than we export to a particular country • ‘TAA’ Trade Adjustment Agreement gives support to those who are unemployed due to the impact of international trade
Current State of NAFTA • Debate on effectiveness by economists • GDP and trade have increased • Environmental standards on energy exports was a 2008 election issue: • 2009, President Obama confirmed he has no plans to reopen or renegotiate NAFTA • No current amendments • Obama Administration wants to increase exports
Opposing Viewpoints For NAFTA • Lowers price of goods • Prevent immigration • Improve standard of living in all three nations • Comparative advantage (competition) • Higher quality • TAA • Globalization is a part of today’s market Against NAFTA • Causes American jobs loss • Lowers average income • Hurts American manufacturing • Does not protect the entrepreneur • Not effective enough
